I live on a decently roomy lot in a neighborhood (just over a 1/2 acre), and I recently had the whole thing fenced. I am debating whether or not to complete the project by painting it or just leave it the natural wood color. What do you guys think? If I do choose to paint it, what color? Maybe dark brown? Also, I really like the look of the natural wood color on the privacy fence section, but I'm wondering if it would look weird to paint the farm fence but leave the privacy fence section unpainted. Really can't decide what would look best overall.

    Thoughts?

Im definitely NOT an expert but what I have learned is that if you leave it bare it will discolor and look beat in a few years. If you paint it, the paint chips, it's kind of a pain to scrape and repaint. When you stain, it just fades and is easier to reapply.

I would use a dark brown cedar colored semi transparent stain.

Either way it looks fine though!

The only thing that looks iffy is that Ford in the driveway! Haha I kid, I kid...

Natural wood looks good, paint once and you have to paint forever, periodically.
I treat exterior wood with a mixture 1/2 each, turpentine and linseed oil. If you choose to repeat every 3 to 5 years its good, if not, still good.

A little of this and a little of that.
Even though paint does chip it'll take years to do that by itself. I would paint it just for the protection it'll provide the wood. If you staying you'll still need to put some kind of polyurethane on it to put it. Stain would look nice too.

Natural wood with a clear sealant. Stops or slows mildew and it'll last longer. At least in my experiences.

And yes, I would do something. Stain or sealant but I would not leave it untreated.

I personally would stain it with one of the weather resistant pigmented stains. Reapplication down the road is much easier. Paint is a nightmare to reapply properly.

Do not use paint, or even a semi solid stain you'll be a slave to that fence. I like @gosolo suggestion. Whatever you do that pressure treated wood needs at least a few months to "dry out". If you do want to do a stain or sealer I highly recommend Armstrong Clark products and wouldn't use anything else. Go with a semi transparent at most as far as color and coverage. I used this on my deck and I really liked how it went on and has worked out. I applied with a car wash brush to a lot of the areas and it was very simple. They also sell a kit to neutralize the ph and prep the wood for stain.

    Depends
Is it pressure treated or cedar.

If it’s pt you need to let it weather for a few months before you paint or stain. When water no longer beads on the surface it’s resdy to paint or stain.

If cedar I use either a clear or a stain with a red tint.
I have a run of cedar privacy that I hit with a red tint stain

You also may wanna look into some caps for all those 4x4 posts, even maybe go back and trim them all on angle to keep water running off.

I caught a clearance sale on some nice LED post caps at home depot last year. I think I paid like $2 each for mine. Was a nice way to finish off my deck re-do. They all still work after a year in the elements too.

Owner of 15y cedar deck and PT lumber fence here. I’d leave it. UV exposure is the enemy, within a year or so opaque stain (ie; paint) chips, and semi transparent stains get blotchy. Maintenance is a real chore because you have to prep the wood or it won’t adhere like it did the first time.

Once you start staining, you’ll never stop as it’s hard to strip/sand all the nooks and corners if you ever decide you want to go back to natural aging and by then certain exposed parts will look different from protected areas.

If you’re willing to labor every few years, the only saving grace is a fence is mostly vertical surfaces and stains will last a bit longer than on flat surfaces. As mentioned above, the wood shouldn’t be repelling water anymore and it needs to be dry before accepting stain.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone. Honestly, now I'm even more overwhelmed! Lol :D I thought it was as simple as paint or don't paint, but looks like there's quite a few options I need to consider. I am not sure what type of lumber was used, but a few of the boards still have the little tags on them, so I'll go out there once the rain clears up and see and get back to you.

Ha! The pictures are about two months old, from right after the fence was finished. I traded the F-150 for my Tundra a few days later

I also had the shed moved to the other corner of the backyard and parked my boats out back. Next step is a carport over them. The leaves and rain are killing me!

I wouldn't paint, stain it with a good exterior product like flood or sikkens. Also that wood needs to be completely dry before doing anything, water test it buy pouring some water on it, if it beads up your not ready.
