My wife has a 2010 Highlander with 86,000 miles no issues at all.
Both our vehicles are paid off. No payments is great!

I have offered to get her in a new vehicle and she refuses. We are going to be putting in a couple thousand in the HL for brakes, struts, plugs etc.

I kind of want her to get a new ride with new safety features.
So, I’m curious. Should I be happy she wants to keep running the HL or would you want to trade it out before dumping money in it?

Use it, mend it, wear it out. The smart money would be to maintain it and roll it till the wheels come off if she is happy with it. Save that car payment amount into a separate account for the down payment on the next ride for when you truly need it.

I say put some money into it and let it ride out. Then start setting aside some money that you would be putting into a new car. A few years down the road if you decide you don’t want anymore. You got the cash. This was always my plan after paying off cars. I could just never hold onto that extra money LOL

I'm in the same boat. My wife's 2011 Highlander she's had since new has 137,000miles on it. It Still looks new and she don't want a payment. I don't bring it up anymore. After 32 years I know when to stay quiet.

my wife is the same way. she has a 2006 scion TC with 50k miles on it and she said that she, "... is going to drive that car until the doors fall off." she really doesn't want a new car even though i have tried to encourage her to get one.

Man, I thought someone would side with me. Haha. Thanks for the advice. I know it’s the right thing to do so I’ll stop bringing it up to her. I will try to set money aside. That is a very smart idea.

Be happy, told my Wife we needed new tires on the Sienna once and the next thing I knew we were signing papers for a Buick Enclave. (who's motor blew up when I was on the way to Maryland with only 2000 miles on it).

    Be VERY happy!

    I’m torn.
On one hand, you’re saving a ton of money.
On the other hand, your wife is getting her way, and that can snowball on you very quickly.

I've learned to not upgrade anything my wife uses unless it's her idea. Always bites me in the ass when I do, even when she like 99% of the new item. That 1% that fails or isn't to her liking will bite you on the ass. Sure there are more safety features, but at least she's in a Toyota. They have been overbuilding their vehicles for years and never hesitate taking my kids out in my 06.

My wife was the same way with her 08 Camry. I finally talked her into getting a 17 Highlander when we had to spend more money on the Camry than it was worth.

Keep it, you don’t need a new car plus it gives you time to stack up monies in the bank. My wife’s car is paid off and we have kept it, it’s been good to us even though it’s an 08 Altima. My truck will be paid off soon and we have saved enough to get her a nicer car, I’m trying to convince her to get in a good used low mileage Lexus GX460. It’s good not owing anyone money, keep your cars, enjoy the savings.

Keep it. Our 2008 Highlander has 188000 km (116000ish miles) on it and has never had an issue aside from the normal wear and tear, brakes and a wheel bearing.

As long as it in good running order and she enjoys it I would say keep it. I wanted to get my wife a new 4runner but she wont get rid of her 2012 Tacoma with 82k on it now...just like your wife she likes it and wants to roll on.

Oh yeah, you definitely gotta watch who and what car you do that with. But I just get the feeling Brad’s wife is just trying to be responsible. And not so much in love with her current car. Those kinds of people never want to buy something nice for themselves and sometimes just needs someone to make that decision for them.

The newer cars will net you a pretty good discount on insurance because of the safety features. Check out if there is a difference between the present vehicle and the new one.
