Putting fox rear shocks on tundra. Not sure if I should use boots or roost shields. I’ve read that on the Tacoma the roost shield on passenger side will not work. Not sure if the same for tundras.

I vote for the roost shields, used them on 2 trucks, fit fine(passenger side must face back, it should and shaft is protected by the rear end in front). Functional and dress it up a bit as well. Wish they made them for 2.5” shocks, using boots on them, but not crazy about it.

Correct. They will not work on thre passenger side of the Tundra. But, you can make them work by "notching" the lower portion around the rear shock mounting bracket. I did....

Who put shock boots on their 5160s?

I have killed one with rocks gouging the shaft and eating up the body seal.

I made my own roost shields from the old Toyota TRD shock covers. Cut up with a razor knife, cut holes, and installed on shock mount.

When the shock body is on bottom and the boot is on top, the boot works like an umbrella and allows water to drain out. When the shock body is on top, the boot just tends to hold dirt and let the shaft body get submerged in the dirt/ water debris. Adding drain holes helps remove the water but doesn't do anything to remove the dirt coating the inside of the boot ribs. I installed boots on my tacoma and ended up cutting them off because of the crap they held. My vote is roost shield or nothing.

On 4runner/FJ/GX Icon makes a nice stainless steel shock shaft roost guard that takes some abuse. I wonder if it would work on these? I had a similar experience with a boot getting full of muddy water and tearing up the shaft, better off leaving it bare in my opinion.
