I just bought my Tundra yesterday evening and didn't notice this until it was in the sun today. It appears to have been scuffed by the person applying the spray in bedliner when they 'painted outside of the lines'.

I'm hoping the dealer will come through and make this right, but I want to know what yall would recommend to correct this. Is this damaged clear coat that needs repair, or will a bit of polishing to remove the high material be fine?

Well, regardless of whether the dealer will cover it or not, is the clear coat eaten through? I don't want to go nuclear with removing it if a simple polish/scratchx might be all it needs.

Clearly something you did not do yourself......make the dealer make it right....period. Hard to say whose fault that was......that is a bed rail cap, and they should not have been near the outside of the bed to spray in the bedliner

Where do they stand when they spray it? Outside the side of the truck, leaning over the bed rails.

It could have easily been cause by himself or anyone else for that matter. 5min in a parking lot and someone could have done it. Most likely by someone climbing in or out of the bed at the dealership or shop. Could be a sprayer or handle hit it during the spraying process to.

Hopefully the op doesn't have any issues with blame or not getting it fixed.

General rule of thumb on scratches in clearcoat: If your fingernail "catches" on the defect as you pull your finger across, it's through the clear. If it doesn't catch, then you are not through the clear. My guess from the photo is the defect is down to the basecoat on the roll at the top of the bed, and not as bad, but maybe through the clear lower.

I would expect the dealer to address that. Just as you recognized the likely origin of the defect, the dealer will admit that is an accidental "brush" from a high-pressure spray, not a scuff. Plus, you've only had the truck one day...What do they think, you did that in a DIY car wash? The defect probably extends (and worsens) under the bed rail cap, because trim is probably removed before spraying to reduce clean-up.

The dealer will try to polish it out first. Some of the defect may polish out, but I doubt it'll polish near the top. If the dealer has a body shop, you'll get a quick answer, one way or the other.

The dealership will probably send it to their detail shop first. If it is still there they will send to the body shop. Sucks you have to deal with it but I think they should fix it. Good luck.

Makes me wonder if detail guy didn't see the defect during the pre-delivery clean-up, raised the issue, and the service manager decided to test out the new owner's "attention to detail". :D

I would take it to the dealership first before you mess with it. They might be a pia if you screw with it and don’t fix it.

From past experience...basecoat WILL NOT BUFF. You might be able to get it to "glow" a little, but even the "glow" will gone the next day. :D

Thanks for the responses yall. I'm still waiting to hear back from my salesperson and hoping for the best. I'm really hoping with this being my second purchase from their dealership they'll be willing to make it right.

They sent me a follow-up survey that I'll wait to fill out until I'm given the nod. Though I'm sure that doesn't hold too much leverage at this point.

If they don't help me out, I might just go to a local bodyshop guy who repaired a scratch I put on my wife's, at the time, brand new 4runner  I was going to order a matching pro surround/bumper caps/mirror caps and have him paint it, so it might just be moving that up the timeline.

If he picked it up the night before....odds are he did not do that himself. Having been behind the spray gun myself a time or two(thousand), you do not necessarily have to stand outside the bed and spray on that sharp of an angle....so, no, that's not the only way to do it. If it was indeed caused by the guy spraying it in, he surely would have known he did it from damage that significant.

He probably should be looking for another line of work......maybe Earl Scheib is still in business somewhere.

Don't underestimate the survey's leverage...I believe they do that survey for corporate. My dealer was very interested in a good review.

Following-up: Got into the dealership and the detailer there just buffed it out. The appearance and feel is correct, and I wouldn't be able to tell if they had done this before I got the truck, so I'm just going to go with it. I'll keep an eye on the approximate area though just to be safe though.

Good deal......just remember that if you have to polish and/or compound that area again.....that some clear coat has already been removed

If they give you any flack about it, mention that you haven’t filled out your customer satisfaction survey yet. Dealerships are generally eager to help right up until the point that’s been filled out. Once it’s submitted, they won’t care anymore.
