No trip to the Adirondacks would be complete without globs of sap on a vehicle. Recs on cleaning it off?

On second look, it looks like the clear coat is etched or raised where the sap was. Is that possible? Tried more Tarmonator, alcohol, wd40, paint thinner, but no luck. New truck, sap was only on there about a week.

I got sap on my 2012 Tundra and didn't try to remove it for a few weeks. By then, it was too late. It permanently damaged/etched the paint. What I thought was just harmless pine tree sap turned out to be some mutant acid sap of some sort. On the plus side, it no longer bothered me as much taking that truck on narrow, paint scratching forest roads after that.

It is slightly raised, pitted I'd say. Dime sized. In the one pic you can see the outline of the dreaded evil pine needle. Not sticky at all. I think the Tarmonator did its job in removing the sap. What's left appears to be a raised water mark in my clear coat. Last night I hit it with a clay bar, Meguiers compound, cleaner, polish and wax (by hand) and it didn't seem to do a thing to the spots- which makes me think there is real damage to the clearcoat.

Feeling your pain. Bought my truck used in Feb and it had a ton of swirl marks scratches etc. Of course its black. Bought a da polisher (harbor freight) and a couple orange and black hex logic pads compound and sealant. Watched chemical guys polishing videos. Took about 40 hours total for entire truck but paint was showroom quality when finished. The orange cutting pad will heat up your clear coat and smooth out those imperfections you are seeing. I too sir am OCD with all things truck related. Here are some product pics of what I used. I would suggest this set or something similar for anyone who likes to keep their pavement princess looking good. Thanks so much for the write up and information. 40 hours? That is come serious OCD!!! Interesting about the orange pad heating up the clear coat - I think I am a little afraid of making a mistake.

Watch the chemical guys video. The dual action polisher will not "burn" your clear coat or burn the edges as a single action polisher will. You'll see why it takes so much time once you watch a video on it. I was a little hesitant at first because the orange pad is pretty aggressive. My entire truck needed it but you can probably just spot polish yours to fix those spots. If you lived closer I would knock it out for you but I'm in Virginia beach.
You'll be about $120 bucks all in on the polisher pads and product and have it to use in a year or two when the paint gets some age and wear on it. If you follow the steps on the video there is no way you will harm your paint.

Thanks a lot. I will take a look at the video tonight. I bought the Meguiar's polisher a few years ago but haven't used it much. I will check to see if it is dual action. I made an appointment at my Toyota dealer for tomorrow morning. I want to see what they say - taking it with a grain of salt of course.

I tried natured alcohol and acetone - not at the same time - and neither worked. Next step is buffing with a good compound and DA rotary buffer. But before that I am going to see what the body shop at the dealer says.

Here is the latest on the tree sap saga. I took it to my local Toyota dealer collision center. To his credit, he recommended I go to a good detailer in my area (he gave me a recommendation) and said he thinks they could buff out the clear coat damage from the sap. He said if they can't, Toyota would repaint my hood and bulge for $500. Is that a good price? The hood bulge is actually the most noticeable blemish unfortunately. I could probably live with the ones on the hood for now because you really need to strain to seem them in the sunlight, but the hood bulge blemish jumps out like a huge pimple.

In any event, I drove right over to the recommended detailer. Guy has been in the business 30 years and by the looks of the cars in his shop (black Benz, red Vette, '57 Chevy, and a few other high-priced imports), and his impressive shop, equipment and operation, he is the real deal. I am surprised I did not know about him, although I never really was OCD about my vehicles until I got my new truck. He said he will give it a try buffing, but said he isn't optimistic. He is afraid he will strip too much clear coat away, especially on the hood bulge - which is plastic, and according to him, a much thinner clear coat than on the metal panels (hood in this instance). He was cool and said he'd jump right on it as his other customers weren't in a rush. It's there now - I will report back later tonight.

I was thinking the same thing, and that is certainly on the table. I can probably get one at my local dealer for around $160 or $170 (pick up, no shipping cost).

Bad news, the professional detailers couldn't buff out the blotches. While it looks like they were able to make them less noticeable, and the rest of the hood looks better just recently cleaned, buffed and waxed, it is still noticeable. They weren't really able to do anything with the hood bulge, as that is plastic and is more difficult to work with as I was told. This is a total bummer. The truck only has 5K miles on it. My option now appears to be a repaint of the hood and bulge, or hood repaint only and I buy another bulge.
