Yeah, i'm still wanting to do it....i'm just physically out of commission right now due to surgery....

    Hewitt: "
The block off plates are an integral part of the solution and the whole kit should be installed at the same time to avoid your exhaust valves from causing problems in the future.
They are not always 100% required when first installing the kit. In the case of installing for prevention they can be omitted. However, if you are already getting valve stuck open codes the need to be installed. The block off plates are the only thing that prevents the air switching valves from leaking exhaust and causing limp mode. Basically, even if your valves are OK right now and are completely closed the valves have still been known to leak later on and cause problems. You can install the module only and see where that gets you but if you have any valve stuck open codes back on you have to install the block off plates. If you can get by without them and just the module make sure you put them in the glove box with the instruction so you know where they are if you need them later. The install really isn't hard so it is just best to get them installed regardless so you don't have to worry about it later."

My kit has been installed for 200k miles with no block off plates.

I've never gotten thrown into limp mode.

I know I have an open valve, because I can hear what sounds like a cracked exhaust manifold at certain RPMs.

    I don't treat this truck like a baby. I haul an 8k 5th wheel camper 2x/year. 3k rpms and 100% in 4th gear.

I don't see myself installing the block off plates.

Scanning the truck recently shows a stuck valve code. I cleared it, but it's still in the memory.

If memory serves me correct, you get thrown into limp mode for a bad pump.

Since we are spoofing the pumps to not come on, there is never a check for the function of the valves.

This kit only works for the early 2nd gens that have NOT had the ecm update that cycles the pumps/valves at random times.

Obviously this only works for states with no smog testing..

for the most part. I've always been curious if a truck with this mod would pass smog. If a person was good at camouflaging the wiring, non would be the wiser unless a scanner was plugged in.

If you just require a visual and all emission equipment was present you could pass.

If you require a tail pipe sniff, I don't know why the bypass mod wouldn't work, since no one takes a cold truck to get smog tested and as you know the system is only used on the 1st minute or so of cold start up. Just free thinking here. I don't have smog testing and have no clue how sharp these testers are and how deep they explore your vehicle.

    Loving the convo.

If your pump ever goes bad a 10k ohm 5volt resistor works in place of the pump, between pos/neg pump power wire. The ECU wants to see the pump off and the resistor tells it is off. Doesn't work for trucks that were updated with the random flash. That's where the ecu needs to see below 1k ohm when on. Why the Hewitt kit can accomplish it with the SAIS drivers.

    Good to know! thanks.
I also noticed that after i did the bypass my truck idles more smoothly with lower RPM. First time i pulled up to a stop sign i thought the engine had cut off until i listened more closely and it was purring like a kitty....i'm not sure what it was idling at before. maybe 1200-1300, and now its at around 900. Also, according to the dash readout, the gas mileage has gone up a little....13.9 to 14.2 so far.
