This stuff breaks my heart. I'm not sure what your best bet is, but I wish you the best of luck. I would get a safety inspection somewhere and see what they say. Hopefully it's not as bad as it looks. If it's not safe and certain things need replaced, if you bought it from a dealership I would see if they are willing to help you.

Otherwise, Toyota may be a good first step, just to see what happens, at least to have it on record in case down the road they start replacing frames like they have in the past.

After all the checks are made, there are places that do undercoating, that may help prevent it from getting worse, though I'm not too familiar with undercoating, etc.

 

Your truck has the cancer. Not the worst I've seen by far but still concerning. What part of the country do you live in and where is the truck from?

Take it back. Ef that. On a sidenote I've heard about some device that you plug-in and ground it to the vehicle to keep it from having electrolysis. I wonder if that could at least stop it in its tracks. Along with some type of a oil treatment like fluid film to keep it from getting any worse. But the bed rust sucks, because you can't really get out it from the underside. You would almost need to unbolt the bed and grind away any rust and treat.

 

Very common for rust issues under a plastic bed liner. That's why people pay a lot of money for spray in liners. Your truck being from New Jersey, Toyota isn't going to do anything for you in the way of helping pay to fix it. Sorry man. Only two options here... Keep it or trade it in. You'll never be able to repair all the rust.

May seem like a dick move but maybe you want to flip it. Or see what Carmax will give you for it. I hate handing off something to somebody knowing that there is an issue that I did not disclose, but....

I'm from NJ. The State of NJ has a dry roads policy during the winter which means they use tons of salt during the winter to keep snow & ice off the asphalt. NJ also has a long shore line and if your truck was previously used near the ocean consistently, corrosion could be a big issue. If you know of a good Toyota dealer in your area have them inspect it for their opinion on whether it's safe to drive, if it's repairable and what are your best options. Not worth risking your family's life on a unsafe vechical.

As a welder for 25+ yrs, Ive seen tons of rust on many different levels. I don't think all is lost. It looks like there's a lot of surface rust. As mentioned above, have it inspected and if all is well, I would undercoat underneath and invest in a spray-in bedliner. Main thing with undercoating is prep and that everything is completely clean and dry prior to sealing it. Do not want to encapsulate anything that is wet as that would lead to.... U guessed it Rust. If have a 08 and that's the first thing I negotiated in the contract, I live at the beach, so salt was a big concern. Good luck and hope everything works out for ya bro

 

Get it accessed and hopefully it's not as bad as it looks. Personally, I couldn't sell it to another person and put them through what you're going through. You know how bad that sucks. I would trade it in for a new car and let the dealership deal with it. Once you have a car in mind, go in as late as you can and strike a deal right before closing. Everyone's going to want to be going home and hopefully it's dark enough that it'll slip by. That's what I did with my F150. Good luck.

No you would would sand away the rust. Get some dupli color paint match. It doesn't have to be perfect as it will be covered once it's lined. Main thing is have Toyota inspect it, or better yet if you know someone you trust and is a mechanic or auto body shop to inspect it.

might be able to save it if you get a good sanding/treatment undercarriage and sand bed + line x. Might cost you couple G's but it is a possibility if you want to keep it. Or go to a dealer and trade it for a newer Tundra.
