So I don't know how exactly to explain this problem but here goes....when my truck is cold I wait for the 5 beeps of the seatbelt chime to go off and then start my truck. It seems like it wants to lag when it starts like the rpms don't give that initial surge. When the truck is warmed up and I start it it doesn't do this problem. I turn the key and it starts up fine. Fires hits about 1500 rpms then drops to normal idle rpms. This does not happen on a cold start. Any ideas? Thanks

how cold are you talking? I know where I live it's -20C and colder during the winter and if you don't plug in the block heater every vehicle starts like that

No I mean cold start as in not at operating temp. Like it's sat overnight. Plus I don't think my truck has a block heater

Battery? Batteries are crap. I replaced mine @38k (3 years) as it sounded weak upon starting

Not a cranking problem does that fine it's a bogging down problem. Doesn't do it when the truck is at operating temp. Only does it when it's sat like over night.

But I've never used it before. That's why gino suggested the update cause flex fuels have this problem apparently

You don’t need to “use it” it’s an update.

There's a known "bug" with some flex fuel engines where the ECM fails to reset the alcohol fuel density reading like it should. This can happen even without using E85. The alcohol fuel density reading continues to "build up" over time, causing hard starts and sometimes poor mileage and performance. My 2014 flex fuel suffered from this ever since my first winter (it's more noticeable as temps drop). You can get an OBDII reader for $15-20 and download a free app like OBD fusion to read the data from your vehicle to confirm if this is affecting you. The app will let you see your alcohol fuel density.

Here's the technical service bulletin. The dealer should be able to update your ecm for no charge under the federal emissions warranty unless you're over 80k miles.
    http://www.revbase.com/BBBMotor/TSb/DownloadPdf?id=187888

If you have ethanol free fuel in your area, sticking with that should help you avoid the problem until you get the update. But, you'll still need to reset the alcohol fuel density somehow (e.g. find someone with a copy of Techstream and the necessary connector).

I guess I should have clarified I've never used E85 in my truck

Thank you that is a huge help. Do you have to have this done once a year or so or ......?

If you get the update, that should take care of the problem for good. Had mine done a month ago, and my alcohol fuel density has been reading 0% even since (been using regular E10 gas). Before I got the update, I was only using ethanol free fuel whenever I had the option to do so. When I was forced to use regular E10, my alcohol fuel density reading would start to creep up. Sometimes it would get as high as 50-70%. I would then have to get the reading reset and go back to using ethanol free. The nearest dealer is over 2 hours away, which is why I didn't get the update as soon as I knew I was having this issue.

It has nothing to do with that. It’s an ECU update

When you talk to the dealer, mention the technical service bulletin and the fact that you are having hard starts despite never using E85. They should take care of you.

Yeah but I heard it was only an issue with the flex fuel models is what I meant. I just wanted to put out that I never used e85 if that mattered

Lol dude, you’re worse than my wife at listening. It has nothing to do with using or not using E85. It’s probably just an ECU (vehicle computer) update that’s needed.

My 15 non flex fuel was doing this last year for about 2 months during the colder months it almost seemed as on starts something was blocking the CAI and it was suffocating. I took a look at the MAF sensor nothing out of the ordinary. Still had some starts like that in the mornings. Finally one day it stopped, hasn't done it since I have no clue what was causing mine.

I realize that and understand. I was just giving all the info about the problem to get the most informed answer. I realize that it has nothing to do with e85. That's why I said "just in case"

You and me both. The dealership was trying to give me the runaround. "I sure hope it wasn't that lift that's giving you the problem...i hope it's not the cai or exhaust cause that wouldn't be covered." I had to drop some knowledge on them. Showed them that everything I had was SEMA approved and asked them how a lift would cause starting issues.

So do you have to go to a dealer to get your ECU updated.

Yup. I think you can do it with a techstream yourself but don't quote me on it. Mine starts no problems now and I'm getting about 4mpg better

Did you point out the technical service bulletin? The dealer I went to was being a little shifty at first, too, even after I explained that my alcohol fuel density was 70%+. Once I mentioned hard starts and extended cranks, like in the TSB, he let up like I said some magic words.

I think you need a little more to get it done that just techstream. I believe you need access to another database to download the update, and I believe you might need another type of connector/cable than just the cheap one that lets you make basic changes and read data from the ECU. You can reset the alcohol density reading with just techstream and cheap cable, though. That, and running only ethanol free fuel, is the temporary fix for this problem.
