I have a 2016 Tundra, 5.7 4x4 71k miles. I noticed my idle was not as smooth as usual, and MPG was a little worse than normal ( not like they get great MPG ) so I decided to change the spark plugs. This was my issue, the plugs looked like there was 100k+ miles on them electrode gap was .050+. I replaced them with the same OEM Denso plugs it came with, it runs smooth and seems to have a little more power through out the power band.

Has anyone had the OEM plugs give out before the 100k mark?

Depends on fuels used and how long your trips might be on average...

That is most likely the reason, fairly short trips to work each day. I am not complaining, the plugs are not difficult to change, and if you catch discount codes right, price is not that bad on the plugs.

I replaced at 60k. Super easy. Helped about 1.5mpg. The old ones looked good though. I usually only do longer hauls.

Replaced mine a little over 100k. Definitely notice a huge difference when daily driving after swapping them out.

Just got my 2020 used Tundra with 10k and I think I will
pull the plugs for a peek.

Installed remote start, throttle controller, transmission oil cooler, front and rear TRD sway bars and K&N air filter.
You may also what to add a can of Seafoam to the next gas fill up to clean your fuel delivery system. Also, over looked, take an old tooth brush and clean your throttle housing. Both are often over looked but will may a huge difference.

Inspect the electrodes for wear. Unless the electrodes are obviously worn, your improvement has probably resulted from replacing fouled plugs. New, clean plugs can foul again. Service life of Denso iridium-tipped sparkplugs has proven to be 100-120K miles as Toyota claims.

Ethanol gasoline sucks. I just finished cleaning fuel systems, rebuilding carburetors, and replacing carburetors on all my small engines to repair ethanol damage. Vehicles are designed to handle the ethanol better, but are still subject to problems. Add Chevron Techron before your next fill up, or run a tank full of Chevron gasoline. Chevron gasoline is pricey, but has the Techron additive blended in. You may find further improvement.

A few years ago, I replaced the plugs on my brothers 09 Tundra with 140k. Plugs still had another 40k left, he mostly drove highway miles. But coming from Subarus that ate plugs at 30k, I was impressed.

I don't care what the manual says, I would never wait until 100k miles to change my spark plugs.

Still following the 30/30 program?...Replace the spark plugs every 30K miles, and gap to 0.030" regardless of what the manual says?

I didn't know this about chevron, or them having an additive. Thanks. I always find your wealth of info helpful, and educational.

A quick search yields the nearest Chevron to me...

If you have a Stewart's I think their premium is ethanol free.

Use a company vehicle and only drive my Tundra on the weekends so also change my oil every 3,000 miles or once a year.

Like clean oil in my Tundra, thats how I roll. :mudding:

There are a few Chevrons around my area closer than yours. :D Chevron is bigger farther west to Cali than in Texas. I just mention Chevron gasoline as an alternative for those that don't care to open the bottle and pour in the contents.

My personal choice has always been the bottle, primarily because I suspect concentration is low in the gasoline, being intended for maintenance rather than remedial. Wally Wurl was once my go-to, but these days, Amazon to your door is king. :D

BTW, I'm not sure Techron will be a panacea for the by-products of ethanol. Techron may help clean out the residue from ethanol, but won't keep it from forming. I switched all my small engines to 101 octane ethanol-free gasoline. I figure that if I buy the expensive ethanol-free gasoline, I can save back the money and labor on rebuilding carbs and cleaning fuel systems. That stuff is too expensive ($4.35/gallon) to burn in quantities the Tundra uses, but so far, no obvious effects on the Tundra.
