Today I noticed today that I scratched my truck, probably did it while brushing snow off my truck. Paint is so easy to scratch. I can feel the scratch with my fingernail. What do you guys use to buff out small scratches like these? IMG_1019.jpg

I would start with a fine polish and see where that gets you. If that doesn’t work, gradually get more aggressive with different steps of heavier cut polish. Then step your way back to the fine cut polish and then wax. At O’Reillys they have the aisle with all the waxes and polishes. But on another aisle where they carry the Bodyworks stuff, Bondo sand paper etc. they have Maguires professional grade stuff over there. That’s what I use. And again start with the finest polish or wax don’t get aggressive right away.

If your fingernail catches in the scratch, it may be too deep for you to repair completely. Paint correction can be tough by hand, but not necessarily impossible. With the surface clean and free of contaminant(s), start with the least aggressive method, preferrably a polish and see where that gets you. Meguiars Ultimate Polish should be available locally, as should Meguiars Ultimate Compound, if you need to step it up. An alternative to this would be Meguiars 105 (compound) and 205 (polish), which is a tried and true combo for scratch removal.

What tools do you have at your disposal....either a DA or a rotary by any chance?

Don't have a rotary and not sure what a DA is? I know I should get a rotary. This paint is so damn fragile. Don't know when I can address this scratch, probably be a few months before I can polish it out. I have some Maguires California gold scratch remover that I used in the past. Had a good results with it. What would you suggest to use for paint protection for the future?

To the OP, a scratch like that would bug me. Let us know if you have good results with anything.

Doesn't stop the nail but I can feel it. Pisses me off but the truck is a tool not jewel. Think I can get it to a faint look.

Any reputable Body Shop will actually have one of their guys in the paint department go out there with some compound and a rag and rub it out for you if it's not a real long scratch. That's what I do for customers that come into my shop and I know it's not through the clear I just go out there and rub it off for them and tell them to have a nice day

DA is a dual-action orbital polisher....probably the most common example is a Porter Cable 7424XP. A lot less risky than a rotary, and certainly more forgiving for anyone who has not machine-polished paint before. As far as type of protection...there are a ton of variables....garage kept vs outdoor, climate, how the vehicle is used, your expectations, etc. Based on some of your other posts, it sounds like this truck might see a fair amount of trails?

I'm a big fan of a solid paint sealant, topped with a quality carnuba product....such as Chemical Guys JetSeal topped with Petes 53....I've used Meguiars Ultimate Wax (actually a polymer based sealant), topped with Pinnacle Signature Series II. Keep in mind, my truck only sees the street. You may want to consider a coating, and of course, there are bunches of them out there.

What do you suggest for a DA polisher, and what kind of pads do you suggest? I've seen some good deals on Amazon, or do you suggest using Porter Cable, and buying pads separately? I do enjoy detailing my truck, and being able to use power tools makes it more enjoyable. I currently use Klasse and Klasse sealant on my paint. I am willing to try other waxes and sealants but Klasse has always treated me right.

I've always been a big fan of the Griots Garage 6" DA...known in detailing circles as the GG6. This machine has more than enough power, and comes with a lifetime warranty, from a company that backs their products. It comes with a 6" backing plate...I recommend buying their 5" conversion kit, and their BOSS 5" pads. These days, thin is in, and the BOSS pads are just that. As far as product....there are tons of them on the market. If you like Klasse, and their products work well for you on your vehicle(s), then stay with them. Griots has their BOSS line of 'creams'.....and the bottles are even color-coded so you'd know which pad to use...also a good option.

Same answers for you DM 2018 on these posts. That one looks deep. The others would come out with a DA imo. Da might make some progress on the scratch. Maybe.if your fingernail catches it. It’s too deep. Just a weekend warrior detailer though.

No. Griots site or Autogeek. Kinda wasting your time doing anything by hand imo. But you don’t know til you try it. Find a good detailer in your area. If you don’t have a da. It’s money well spent. But do your research. It’s one of those things that you don’t go the cheap route. Or you might be worse than you are right now. Lots of cheap “detailers”’out there.

It’s black. Better get use to it. Same boat as you. You learn with black that it is what is sometimes. Just get it detailed once or twice a year. And don’t stress about it. My 3rd black truck. Still haven’t learned to not get black again. But always gravitate to the black truck. It’s up to you. I’d do the whole truck if it was
me. Consider it a love -hate relationship with black.

Not gonna hurt anything. Make sure it’s clean first. Never used that stuff. Honestly, probably will do nothing for that scratch. Unless it’s paint transfer from something.

You can get Meguair’s Scratch X pretty much anywhere. You could try that first and see if it helps.

And never wash it in a hurry again.
