Trying to save some time. I'm interested in ordering a 2018 Tundra but one of my "must haves" is a remote starter. I won't go through another winter without one.

What models come with a remote starter or is this a dealer installed option?

I'm looking for something unique. Any suggestions on what models, options, can make my Tundra stand out in a crowd?

You can get one that is run off of your smart phone. Many more options than the plain Jane style.

Is that dealer installed or an option? I didn't see it listed as an option. A few years ago I had one installed by a local after market vendor that worked with my iPhone and it was great, but I'm looking for one that is supported by Toyota.

I have the factory installed remote start and I have to say I don't like the fact that it shuts the truck off when you open the door. I know it is a security thing, but most other brands I have seen allow you to open the door and put the key in the ignition while it is still running. I would honestly go with aftermarket.

Aftermarket remote start will be 10x better than the factory.

I just had a no-frills starter/door lock Viper unit installed. Tech can program the run time and set to a learning mode for weather stuff. They had one that works with your phone too. Got it installed for $175 OTD @ PC Richard. So far so good. Had an older model Viper in my '04. Small 1 car garage, so the Mrs. gets that in the winter...

    I also recommend aftermarket.
The dealer installed one is lot the best.

I am having a Viper with a 1Mile range and 2-way radio installed tomorrow morning. I can report back this weekend.

Be sure to keep the option where you click once and the driver door unlocks and twice for all doors... If you ever install the tailgate pop and lock you'll love this feature.

After a half day with my new Viper 5706V installed here is what I have figured out.

Has the ability to remotely check the interior temperature when it is off.
What a Smart Start feature that will start it based on temperature.
It has a 1-mile range in perfect conditions. Wouldn't go 100 yards from inside my house, and through two townhouses between my and truck. (Expected, but a good call-out)
Can still use factory key fob is you want.
Stays on when opening door. Will shut down if you touch brake without turning key to acc position.
The one I bought has an alarm as well. If you just want the remote start you can save $100
LCD remote is really nice especially for checking interior temp.

I am happy with it so far. I just hope that the alarm portion isn't really touchy or I will disable it or run in silent mode (this is where the truck doesn't alarm, it pages your remote).

With the aftermarket you still have to put the key in and turn to on. So why is it a issue to turn the key 1/8 turn further and start a warm engine?

When you open the door with the factory remote start the car turns off and you have to then put your key in the ignition and restart it.
    It kinda defeats the purpose.

The purpose is to get in a warm and defrosted truck or a cooled down one. The factory remote does that.

    Me dealer installed this
    https://www.compustar.com/remote-start/prime-1bam
Not fancy but you can buy this
    https://www.compustar.com/product/dr-3400/
And it will give you the ability to use your phone. It doesn't shut off if you open the door but only if you push the brake pedal and the key is not in the ignition. Also locks and unlocks the doors. I like it. I don't know if it's stock but they offered it for free when I got the undercoaring and cloth protection.

    None yet!
At the cost of double the workload on your starter every time you use it??? (In my case with my Tacoma, every single time I walk to the the truck...)

No thanks... the factory is still shit.
