Guy I bought the truck off told me over the holidays that he had the rear diff repaired a few years ago and the guy told him it would never leak again, so I had to take a look

I immediately started scouring the classifieds and scored this for $100

Wow that original diff looks like a marshmallow that was kept over the fire too long... you did well finding the replacement, Jake.

Great buy! I hardly think I'd find one that nice in my area for $100 or even several hundred for that matter.

The original one looks like toast. It's good you replaced it.

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
Was the guy parking it in salt water overnight or something?

Reason number 246 why my wife doesn't let me decorate the house. I would use a diff housing as a manly toilet paper holder. Thats brilliant!

You could use the old diff and rear axle as a sweet base for a bridged coffee table…. Maybe put clear lacquer over all the rust to preserve the look (and prevent rust flakes from getting all over everything).

I had to reuse my rusty looking differential but the housing and axles came with the deal, even the brakes were new. Guy said he bought it and replaced seals and brakes only to find out his truck had abs

There's a guy in our area that sells them for $400 refurbed from the south. Dealer quoted me just about $1500 in parts and labor (installing bearings and seals) for new.

I found an entire axle up in Maine on a truck that came from Az. but if the $400 one was available, I would have bought that.

Yes but I believe the $400 ones are also housing only no axles or diff

Right - but that's all you really need. I couldn't even give away the old diff (I reused the axles) or the axles and scrapped them. So this does only fix the housing issue, but I haven't seen many users actually break the diff or axle.

I think the only challenge would be finding a replacement limited slip if someone drove it low on fluid for a long time. I simply used gas tank sealant to hold until the axle housing was prepped for replacement.

I think I saw someone cut the end off the housing and make a bearing pulling tool out of it
