Rear bumper variations

Hey all. I've got the chrome front bumper on my sr5 but the painted rear. It's always seemed mismatched to me and I'm a fan of chrome bumpers just for the durability aspect. What I'm curious about though is the more I look I don't see the sensors installed in any of the rear chrome bumpers like mine has. I was gonna look around the parts yards at some point to see if I could find a good one cheap but now I'm wondering if Toyota didn't make the chrome ones compatible with the back up sensors. Am I missing something?

 

I believe the reason the rear comes painted is to include the BSM/RCTA/proximity sensors. I’ve not seen the chrome with sensors. My limited also has painted rear bumper with sensors and chrome front, oddly with sensors.

. Mine too. I just assumed since the front being chrome came with the sensors, the back being painted was just for looks and not function.

 

The only way your SR5 would have the color matched rear bumper caps is for the BSM sensors, and they won't work through metal. You'd have to give up the BSM and deal with the alarms/alerts somehow to put the OEM chrome caps on. You could possibly find a chrome wrap to put on them, but IDK if that would interfere with the BSM sensor that is behind the cap.

 

It's not the little round sensors you can see, it's a large flat sensor behind the cap.

 

Gotcha. I thought it was the little sensors only. May not be worth the trouble.

Front bumper has cutouts for the parking sensors so the front bumper can be made out of any material since the sensors are sitting unobstructed. Rear bumper also has cutouts for the parking sensors.

BSM is comprised of two radar modules sitting behind the bumper, one on each corner. The material of the bumper is plastic so the radar can "see" through it unobstructed. Chrome/metal won't allow the radar to function properly.
