So, I have been thinking of ways to save money with household bills. Figured this could be a way to do it. Anyone else do this? I also saw it on TW on the DFW BS thread posted by one of the guts thinking of doing it. What do y'all think?

Also read this that was part there in TW

i think it depends on what you're harvesting for... if you need to purify & store then it's going to be a loooooong return on investment. If you can get away with storing for outdoor use on garden and so on then your set up costs are a ton lower

Not necessary here in Georgia, we've been averaging a few inches of rain every week for several months.

Not really for consumption use....more for lawn and garden.

Well it's been a while for rain here in Texas and so hot that it feels like your skin is burning off your body.

Harvesting rainwater is illegal in some states. I doubt its illegal in texas (because murica'), but might want to check.

You are better off ditching cable/phone/internet and setting ac to 80deg

In that case, yes,if you have an idea of your monthly consumption for outdoor use then it should be simple to decide whether to do it or not. There's also the advantage of being able to ignore city or county water restrictions if you're using collected water.

for real... Especially phone... i don't get why people have home phones any longer.
My AC is set to 78 during the day when i'm home alone and it makes a ton of difference but Mrs G can't stand it that hot so when she gets back, it's at 74.

We've had that kind of Summer here as well, but this year has been more tropical with lots of humidity. Of course, that could all change next week.

Harvesting rain water for a garden is a great idea if it's easy to get that water to the garden when it's needed.

I don't have cable and the only phone i have is my cell phone....considering both my jobs require a way for me to be contacted and i don't have family near me, not having one is not even an option. My A/C is set to 78 and i need internet for school...not only myself but my child.

I have seen 55 gallon barrels conveniently placed to catch rain run off from gutters but if you had enough rain to fill them you wouldn't need them. Catch-22. Recycling grey water can be a pain.

My best guess would be something to do with the aquifer not getting the water from the rain if you harvested it for consumption use.

You'll be happiest if you can use gravity to deliver collected water to your garden(s).

Small submersible electric pumps are available, they work pretty well.
