Hey everyone, wanted to get a build thread started for my friend/customers rig. The truck started as a 2000 4x4 access cab limited model with 4.7 V8. My buddy picked it up at an auction in North Dakota for 700 bucks. It was rolled over twice before the auction but that didn't stop my buddy from driving it off the lot and putting at least another 1000 miles on it before we started tearing it down for this build!

The purpose/goals for this build are to have a very capable rig that can handle hardcore rock crawling and also some high speed desert type driving. This truck will be fully custom built from front to back by C4 Fabrication.

    Specs:
Axles- Dana 60 high pinion front, GM 14 bolt rear. Most likely will end up with 5:38 gears and Detroit lockers.
Suspension- Dual triangulated 4 link front and rear with 2.5x16 fox remote resi coilovers.
Drivetrain- stock 4.7 v8, stock auto trans, Atlas 4.3:1 T-case

We are trying to maintain a complete cab and still have some comforts like A/C and heat, but the frame has been chopped in front of the engine mounts up front and everything behind the cab will be chopped off and be custom built.

This will not be a consistent build that I will be able to post progress on weekly. We are doing the build in sections as the owner has funds to do so.

Here is how it looked the day I drove it into the shop!

Then did some test fitting of the High Pinion Dana 60. With the axle positioned where we wanted it (about 8" forward of stock) I immediately realized that we were going to have to create some more room for suspension up travel. The original oil pan on the tundra has a low hanging area at the very front of the pan that had to go. So after doing some research with my Toyota mechanic buddy, we realized that the oil pan on the lexus 4.7 v8 is much different than the one that comes on the tundra 4.7. My buddy happened to have a Lexus 4.7 laying in his sisters storage shed that he offered to sell us the oil pan setup off of. I swapped the new pan setup onto the tundra and that gained us about 3" more room for uptravel. I also wanted to raise the engine to gain us even more room, so I built new engine mounts using poly bushings. The new mounts lifted the engine another 2", gaining us a total of 5" more room for suspension and axle uptravel compared to the stock setup. Unfortunately the pics comparing the tundra pan to the lexus pan got lost, but I do have a couple shots of what the pan looks like now.

how its sitting right now. We are currently waiting to get the double ended full hydro steering ram from PSC and the heavy duty diff cover from Barnes 4wd so I can get them mounted to the axle and figure out how to build the axle trussing with all the permanent link mounts. Once that is done I can move on to building the new front framerails and all the tube bracing.

Thank you! Its been a pretty fun build so far. It will be nice to get back to work on the front end when the hydro ram shows up.

A bit more progress for everyone. Got the Trail Gear 2.5"x10" full hydro steering ram from Twisted Customs and the HD diff cover from Barnes 4wd the other day. Bolted the cover on so I could set the ram in its general area to see how its going to fit. With the axle sitting at full bump, there are some oil filter clearance issues that I will have to figure out how to take care of. Once I figure out how to relocate the oil filter, then I can move on to building the axle truss with the ram mount.DSCN0886.jpg DSCN0887.jpg

I had to move the rig out of the shop for a bit to make room for another project. Set it down on the tires and let the shocks bottom out to hold up the truck. The truck sits level at stock height when its at full bump with 38" tires on it! I was surprised the front sits down that far.

Thanks, its going to be a long process, but it will get finished someday! haha

You would have to talk to the owner about that, but I have a feeling he would say no! ;) There is already at least 8000 bucks in parts and labor into this rig and it looks like ive hardly done anything!

I thought it was a hell of a build. My guess, the owner of the 1st gen ran out of money. Some people go into a build thinking that 10K will get them far. I have a couple fab shop owner buddies that have had to start charging storage fees due to people running out of money and the vehicle has become a shop queen.

Here is the website for the C4 Fab, they do some killer work...if anyone is interested.

    http://www.c4fabrication.com

I also sent them a message inquiring about the build.
