I had a local shop give me a quote to coat my wife’s 4Runner wheels. He lead time has me a little skeptical. Said if I have the bare wheels to him by 10 he can have them coated and ready to mount same day by 3-4pm. Any quality issues I should be concerned with?

Not if he doesn't have any other work. (That would concern me actually) Is he talking bare as in blasted ? That would also concern me.

No. Bare wheel as in no tires, valve stem, etc. One day turn around on a scheduled day. Currently looking at early February.

My question is regarding can a quality job be done in one day only. Wasn’t sure if that’s enough time for prep, coating, heat treat, and curing?

FWIW he is the highest recommended coater in the west Texas area

I dropped my 4 off last Monday to my powder coat place to be done. Told me they would be ready this week, I told him I was in no rush because I'm not putting them on until April. Too much snow and salt in NY this time of year.

Maybe he has tons of work and fires up the oven every day. Some ppl take longer as they group all the products so they don’t have to run the oven as much.

Once they come out of the oven they are done, he might be a big place that can do it that fast or he has a hole in his schedule to fit them in. Without knowing his set up theres no way to know.

Powder coating is a fast process. If you give him bare wheels at 10am, he could have them to you by noon.

If he has to sandblast, that might take 15 to 20 minutes per wheel.

For sliders the place i called said 3 days. Not sure if done one day and then needs to bake that long or just how busy they are. If well reputable like you say, i wouldnt worry to much.

If they say 3 days, it's purely because of scheduling. Spraying would take about 5 minutes, and they bake for one hour.

That’s reasonable. A friend of mine does coating and honestly the pre work (sandblasting) wheels take the majority of prep work. Then comes if he’s applying primer before the final color coat. I had several wheels I’ve had done on my car that were all primered. It make the final color coat look really nice.

Didnt think it was a terribly long process. But they dont have much competition and are very busy.

They usually wait until they have a bunch of the same color and do them together, I have a lot powder coated for work and if I catch em I’m the right day I get stuff back within a day. Odd colors usually take a while because they have to stop there other projects for the color swap.
have any of you ever tried cerakote on wheels? I use that a lot and I’ve never seen it chip like Powdercoat can after years in the sun. It’ll wear some but ive yet to see it chip. I also haven’t left it out in the sun for years either though I usually do it on rifles or random small parts. I’ve been debating trying it on a set of mine just to see what happens

I’ve heard of cerakote but have never had it done. I’ve had brake calipers powder coated for years that have heals up to the heat and through the crazy winters without fading. I think the end results all depends on the prep work and priming. Some metals are more porous and will outgas during the baking process; which ends up with eventual cracking and flacking.
