Curious how many potential Tundra buyers are waiting until the end of next summer to purchase the next generation Tundra. The current model is a dinosaur in the automotive world, it’s around 14 years old now.

According to Torque News; “A potential shocker within the truck community would be the introduction of a new Tundra hybrid system. This rumored hybrid would be powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine. It is speculated that this will produce mpg upwards of 30 miles per gallon and produce 450 horsepower and get you going with 500 lb.-ft. torque.”

I would wait for the 2021. Alas, I’m not in the market. People say not to buy a first model year but I wouldn’t be hesitant since it’s Toyota.

I agree. I would not hesitate to purchase the 1st year of any new Toyota model. I think the hybrid option will be popular with buyers. 1st year Ford, Chevy or Dodge? No way!

??? The 4th generation Tacoma will not debut until Q3 of 2022 as a 2023 model.

it won't be a V8. If you like V8s just get one before they are gone.
like they say" no replacement for displacement "

It will get interesting next year in the full size pickup truck market. The new Tundra will be revealed as well as the all new 15th generation 2021 Ford F-150. Rumor is that Ford will be dropping the 5.0 Coyote engine for an all new 4.8 V8.

Are you sure no more V8s for 2021? I've read that the 5.7L will still be an option, its just the 4.6L is being axed.

There's not a chance in hell that any of that is accurate. The only part remotely feasible is a turbo V6 . No one is even close to getting 30mpg in a full size and the Big 3 are much more ambitious risk takers than Toyota.

My guess is either a bit more efficient and powerful 5.7 (or some "new" but similar displacement and design) making 20mpg at 390-400hp and 410tq.

It will be nothing groundbreaking with regard to tech features. It'll just be catching up somewhat with the others. The exterior will get a frontend facelift, looking a bit more like the Tacoma but hopefully not too much.

That's what my crystal ball says.

I was sort of at that cross road and decided to buy now, as in 8 weeks ago. While the build may seem ancient it's tried and true, especially near the end of the run. I was not sure what the future would bring and I really wanted to be in a V8 nor did I want to be in the first year of a new build. Also, I fear Toyota may looks towards the Stop/Start technology and that would totally steer me away. Good luck with your decision.

Same boat here. I just got a deal I'm happy with on a '19. Holding out for a '21 did cross my mind, but I'm very comfortable having a well established, dependable platform. I don't get excited about having a 17 speed AI emotion sensing transmission or whatever unneeded improvement gets rolled out next. The start/stop would absolutely prevent me from buying a '21 (push button start would be nice, though). I haven't even turned on the TSS or lane control in my truck yet, and it's possible I never will. Real safety features are great, but so many things lately seem to be there just to increase profitability. Feels like it's only more things to break. To quote Boris the Blade: "Heavy is good. Heavy is reliable".

I know I sound like an 85 year old. Get off my lawn.

Toyota is already producing hybrid V6s in the Lexus lineup with success. I would think/hope any hybrid system produced for the Tundra would be free of typical "first run" gremlins. Technology wise, if Toyota pushes the envelope (for them) may have some kinks.

Same dilemma, but I was upside down on my 16 tundra and needed to get out of it ASAP. Ill run my 19 until the 2nd year of the new platform then trade it in.

I would have no reservations buying a first model year Toyota. I currently drive a 2016 Tacoma and have had zero issues. The transmission is annoying, but was mostly fixed with software updates. My concern on the 2021 Tundra would be the price increase. Will we be paying in the Ford F-150 Lariat range to get the hybrid with 30mpg? If so I will opt to buy a 2020 that will be heavily discounted here in about 8 months.

I'd be very surprised if it's not still a V8. I would wager if you see actual sales number on the fords that the 5.0 is still outselling the EcoBoost, or at least sells in high enough numbers that Ford wouldnt risk pissing off the V8 purists. Mustang owners are constantly saying a turbo will replace the V8 in 2021/22 but that wont happen either.

And no full size truck running on gasoline will see 30mpg in the next 5-10 years. I almost laughed out loud at that part of the torqenews.com caption.

The “don’t buy first year models” mindset is not true in every case. I have a 2014 which is supposedly the first year of the 3rd gen tundra and I’m almost 80k miles trouble free everything stock except suspension. Buy what you can afford and is a better choice for you financially, other than that, you don’t need a new truck if the one you have is fine.

Me too. I don’t trust gimmicks. I don’t like all these auto features. GM burned me on AFM. I just want a truck to do truck stuff. Don’t need a gimmicky tailgate to get me to buy your truck. In fact, I’ll avoid it. That’s why I just bought a new Tundra. Tried and true.

I've been told a diesel-electric hybrid by one of the TRD NASCAR engine builders. And I've heard twin turbo v6 from his co-worker.

I just dont see it. Maybe some diesel or diesel based optional engine, but Toyota isn't exactly known for sticking its neck out. I seriously doubt there'll be anything ground breaking, and 500hp at 30mpg (wasn"t your prediction, obviously) is just laughable.

I like my V8 and will stick with it for a long time. For one I really like it and the 5.7 is proven to be very reliable and worry free. Also I won't be in the financial position for a long time to purchase a new vehicle. I knew when I got this truck that I would have it for a long time, and was prepared to pay for a lot of gas for as long as I had to. I wouldnt buy the 1st model year after a total overhaul even if I could. I would wait a couple years to get the bugs worked out. I'm sure the 2021 is gonna amazing and a game changer but for many reasons, its not for me. I'm sure excited to see it though.
