I figure I'll start this thread to document this ridiculous idea and the undertaking.

    Goals:
    - More bedside clearance
    - Shortened bed overhang (ie. more departure angle)
    - Shed weight hopefully
    - Flat auxiliary gas tank (my current one is vertical and holds 45 gallons)
    - Low-profile toolboxes
    - Small flatbed for hauling moderately sized items
    - Spare tire area to accommodate up to a 44" tire
    - Ruggedness; the tubes on the sides will be beefy enough to act as sliders

It's going to be mostly a cage using 1.5"/.120 round steel tube. 1.75"/.120 will be used for the sides and sliders. 2"/.120 will be used for the bumper. A few segments of ~6" C-channel will be used as crossmembers between the frame rails that should hold up the aux tank, boxes, and spare. That means the OEM spare tire carrier will be cut out for room, too. There will be aluminum plating on the bedsides to fill in the gaps.

All that being said for now, my current auxiliary gas tank is for sale if anyone wants it. It holds 45 gallons and I gravity fed it into my main tanks filler neck. My toolbox is also for sale; it has some holes drilled into the bottom of it for mounting. The tank retailed for $550 before fees and I'm asking $400. The toolbox, which locks with a key, was $320 and it's yours for $200. Old, but still accurate, photos below..

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BV7rO-og2OM/?taken-by=spvrtan

For now, I'll be sketching up a few draft designs and mocking it all with PVC once I take the OEM bed off the truck.

Hey Kris, do you have a link to the fuel tank?

Damn, those are pretty nice tanks. I'm sure you know what I was looking for...DOT complaint.

I'm looking for a tag tank for my truck so I can have 60 gallons+. Thanks for the link.

When is your expected completion of this hybrid bed?

Yea, it's DOT-compliant for diesel since it's a diesel tank. I use it for gas, which is technically not legal, but the tank can handle it just fine.

I want to say that I aim to have this bed done in under 2 months but it's going to coincide with my trailer build. Both are the two biggest projects I'll be tackling and want to finish by the end of this year latest. The trailer was at a standstill for a few weeks up until last week when my axles finally came in and I'll be getting them on this weekend; here's the current state though..

Is that what the manufacture said? Maybe I read it wrong. I seen the transfer was diesel only, and I assume that's what you are talking about?

Yea, their site says as much that it's for diesel and other fuels (ie. they say "diesel only" in a few places because that's what it's DOT-complaint for). I called them over the phone about a year ago to verify that, while I couldn't legally carry gas in it -- at least in CA -- that it is perfectly safe to use it for gasoline also.

I agree. There are some cheap tanks out there I wouldn't even think about doing that with. Looks like you chose a quality tank supplier.

Totally. I have zero complaints with the tank for its intended purposes. The only thing I did extra was put thicker rubber strips between the bed and tank for more cushion on bumpy offroad trails; I also strapped it down with a ratcheting strap even though it is bolted to the bed.

I have been contemplating doing something similar. Want to build a tube bed with aluminum floor and hang fiberglass bedsides. Build in mounts for my RTT rack, water and fuel tank but I hate to loose my tailgate as that prevents me from having to bring a table when I camp.
    Pics for ideas.

Yea, kinda like that. There won't be a permanent top half but I would like to eventually add a removable top ..like a hybrid shell. I'll be keeping the spare above the frame and mounted flat. I'll try and get some shitty phone sketches uploaded on the rough design.

Nice, When i was truck shopping for my second truck I was planing on building a flat bed. There's lots of potential but I'm not sure if it would have really offered any weight savings.

Yea, it sure is wishful thinking. I need a rough idea of the bed weight itself so I can gauge what weight to aim for versus a stock bed. The only weights I could estimate are the tailgate at roughly 50lbs, tow hitch at 90, and spare tire at 65. I couldn't find anything online about the bed itself. The taillights together are maybe 5lbs. The OEM rear bumper as a whole around 40lbs.
