I have a 2017 Tundra SR5 TRD off road 4X4 I bought a few months ago. I could not take all the chrome on the grill anymore. I really wanted to go the TRD Pro grill route, but wanted to try the plastic dip route first. So far I really like it. I actually used Dupli Color custom wrap paint in the carbon matte black. I like the dupli color, but, it did not spray well when the can was tipped more than a 45 degree angle. I removed the grill and placed on some saw horses to paint.

Anyway here is the picture of the finished product. I left the Toyota emblem chrome but I may change that. What do you guys think about the emblem?

I like it. I have the same front end. I don't have a problem w chrome, but holy crap it's a lot of chrome. Every time I look at it I think of the cylons from the original battlestar galactica. It just needs a red light going side to side.

I like it. Personally I would black out the emblem too. If you don't like it just peel it off.

Love it the way it is.. You've convinced me, and I'm going to do it. Did you take the grille out to paint it? If so, how easy was taking it out?

Yes, I removed the grill to paint. It was very easy. 5 to 10 minutes tops! When you open the hood you will see 4 screws and 2 of the plastic rivets. Remove those and there are 2 clips on each side near the bottom that you just kind of lift and pull forward on the grill and they come undone. The Toyota logo just clips on with 3 clips. Very easy to remove

I did about 4 or 5 coats. Did the 1st coat lightly, then 3 or 4 more medium coats. I basically used the whole spray can for the job.

I like it! It looks great since you kept the chrome around your grill, and at the ends of your bumper. As long as you keep that chrome, I vote you keep the emblem chrome. Good job with your project!

I agree! It's been a week now and the more I look at it, the more I like it as is. I don't think I'll be blacking out the emblem.

Hey guys.. Can someone please educate me on some on this? I want to do the exact same thing.. I was looking at grills.. and thought 'why not paint the center piece first.. and if I dont like it, I can just replace the grill.' And here it is! Someone has already done exactly what I was curious about.

I have some questions about the paint products used in the threads -

Over and over I see Plasti-dip mentioned, and in this thread the paint used was the Dupli Color brand. The paints are a rubbery application that is temporary? Why are temporary paint products used? Advantages/disadvantages? If I did this to my grill, can I plan on having to re-do it a few years later? Are there not any permanent solutions that work nicely? I get that it gives the option of undoing it if, in the end you dont like the look.. but if I know I like the look of the black insert, I would be interested in making the change permanent.

    Any info is greatly appreciated!

The reason that I think a lot of people go with plasti dip or something like it is less prep to do it. With other paints you have to sand down the item so that the paint will stick. This is why I used plasti dip on my emblem. And will for the grill and badges.

Mmm interesting... but isn't the Plasti dip material temporary? What happens if you go through a carwash? I was in Oreilly Auto yesterday and asked about doing such a painting.. They didnt really have much to offer about it.. but they did show me a primer on the shelf that is for plastic. Their recommendation was to use the primer and then just a good paint.. I guess if I screw it up badly I could try some of those snap on overlays and try it again - https://goo.gl/2YP8VM

Ha.. I couldn't stand it and took the plunge.. It looks like the others in this thread. I like it.. I feel the same as Bprose. I like chrome fine. but there are limits.. This reduces it enough for me.. I left the emblem chrome. I did however use paint.. I went with the plastic primer and then the black matte paint. We'll see if it works out long term!.

The can says to wait at least 24 hours after to do a car wash. Plus, if you do mess it up a bit, you can just re-spray it.

Did the entire grill and hood bulge. Just to much chrome to deal with. I want to be able to sneak up on the zombies. End caps are next.
