Well for this weekends work I wanted to try my experiment of painting some caps and handles for my crew max. Got my set from @jwm9289, thanks! First issue is the paint. Apparently since radiant red is such a pretty color, Toyota made sure no auto parts stores carry the premixed matching paint. This was directly due to random orgies breaking out in front of the duplicolor displays. Lucky for me, I found a seedy place which I was able to get a rattle can mixed up for me. In talking with the paint pusher, I enquired about primer and he pointed me to some adhesive base coat to put on prior to primer. After purchasing some degreaser I was on my way. 48E4719E-E202-4E88-AA25-721F2ADE372E.jpg75CC1182-3FCA-490E-8C81-F56215872801.jpgCE04EFDC-8EA6-494A-A4DC-89D65EF397F1.jpg

Next up is trying to come up with a suitable paint booth. I got an unfinished area in my basement so why not? I went ahead and took the black pieces off the back of the handles (lil locktite on those huh?). Next up is sanding....600 grit for what seemed like eternity to get a good scuff on them all. Now I got to figure out how I can hang them. Wire hangers bent just right....right? Well apparently we don't have any in the house. Off to walmart I go because if anywhere would have a wire hanger pack, it would be them....NOPE. Who woulda thunk? I grabbed a plastic pack and called one of my nabors, thankfully she had a half dozen to trade. Next up hanging them up..

Couple coats of adhesive. Couple coats of primer. Couple coats of paint....F^&%ing paint run on a door handle!! As I was painting I switched hands cause my hand was getting tired. (Ive been feeling pretty crappy for a few days and am apparently harmless as a kitten now.) Well shit. guess I will wait till tomorrow so I can sand that down.

Nice work. Hope you feel better. Be careful painting in that closed space. Turn off gas appliances etc down there if you have them.

Thanks. I don’t have any gas stuff, but I am taking a break from spraying for a day.

Well, got the stuff cleared today. I think I am going to wait a bit before wet sanding. I know it gets harder...but for someone that doesn’t know what they are doing, that may be a good thing. 2DF3D663-381A-4367-BD9A-B8CCD5A20272.jpg

If I had to do over again I would have had my chrome front bumber caps painted instead of replaced with the plastic ones. They are too flimsy.

Looking good brother. Keep up the good work.

I have yet to take it out and look. Feeling better today so I had to go out and do the shopping for the week. Gonna make me a box of mac and cheese then get to wet sanding. Hopefully post some pics up later

GOD DAMNIT!! Hit a couple of edges and it got down to the primer with 2000 grit. Well...guess back to the store to buy some more paint and clear. I think I may just hit it with the polish after repeating all this shit again. Did I mention that I have no idea what I am doing?

@Blueknights75 i went ahead and polished one up, the match is spot on. Apparently this o'riley has the ability to match via camera if needed. If I wasn't a second rate aramture at doing this, I could show you the finished product installed. But, it is looking like its going to be another week.

Ok. Got back around to respraying my caps and handles....lessons learned.

If hanging, make sure they can’t move when spraying

Make sure you use adhesive pre prep for primer

Make sure you are spraying all edges good including back side

If you sand through color, sand the whole thing down, start from square one

    3m paint protection(once cured fully)

    Make sure doggie approves

Taking longer than anticipated. Did throw on the caps tonight. Gotta get a half hour to do handles here soon

I have to be totally honest... the mirror caps look ever so slightly darker than the rest of the truck.

Is it just the shadow playing tricks? Hard to tell in a picture.

I appreciate your write up though! This kind of thing takes some guts to attempt and you’ll be an inspiration for some people here I suspect.

Good! The gloss factor sure matches up well.

All in all it looks like a job very well done for someone who self proclaimingly has no idea what they are doing!!

I think it matches pretty well. When I get to the handles, that will be the true test. There is more of an orange peel texture on them then the rest of the truck when you look closely, but I can live with it. After a couple weeks, I will throw on some wax and hopefully match the shine a bit better.

Anyone know the bolt pattern/size for 90148a0005? Its the bolt that goes to the handle from the outside of the door. Yeah, mine fell out of the drivers side into the door. Got my arm all cut to shit trying to fish it out. Isn't rattling or anything in there. BUT in my infinite wisdom, i shut the door in frustration and the lock with the freshly painted cap popped out. FML. Anyway, just looking to go to fastenal to get the part since toyota is closed for the night. IDK if my local toyota would even have it. I may just go buy all the sizes as cheap as they are..
