Has anyone ever painted the chrome grill surround and hood bulge themselves using this paint brand? Is it a close match?Screenshot_20210328-200517_Firefox.jpg

Welcome from NC Mike! A few have attempted. The search function will be your friend on this request. I went the easy route and just purchased the color matched parts from Toyota. Good Luck and look forward to seeing how your progress goes...

    Welcome from NY.
It might be cheaper and easier to wrap those parts or buy color matched ones.
You would have to strip the chrome and prep it before you can paint it.

I’d like to see the outcome. For $100 already into it for supplies, you might consider buying factory color matched.

I bought the grill and bulge for $390 and sold my chrome grill and bulge for $200 shipped, profit of about $120.

The price difference is still substantial and/or something to consider but your free time is also something to account for.

For me, no wasted weekends, trial and errors, and driving around with a grill-less truck was worth the ~$270-80

Painting chrome usually does not work out well. Tried that route before. Buying the color matched bulge and surround is the best option. As far as paint, AutomotiveTouchup.com is the go-to source.

If I was going to paint, I would only try black as the colors will be off.

I went the DIY bedliner route. Cost me $150cad all in, parts and supplies and I still have my original parts.

I painted mine with Dupli-Color and the match to MGM 1G3 was pretty much spot on. I used 2k Clear for the clear coat. Everything looked great - for two weeks until any bug or rock that hit it chipped the paint off and let the chrome show through.

Moral of the story, just buy OEM painted parts and save yourself the trouble.

There is a video of a someone painting the grille black but I've not seen a follow up on how well it held up.

I do my own painting and while not a pro, am very happy with my results. I have used those rattle can solutions for base and clear, and they are OK, not great. They of course will not atomize and lay down as nicely as a real gun solution. Most recently I painted a mirror for an older vehicle I have since sold. The base was OK, the clear had orange peel which was to be expected. For a side mirror, it went OK. You can paint chrome, just takes a good scuffing. It is all about the prep. I recommend selling and getting non-chrome versions and paint those, instead. That is what I did.

Running boards. Shaved vehicle emblems. TruXcedo low profile tonneau cover. LED interior lights along with cargo bay and reverse lights.
Went too three paint shops, all told me instantly that they will not paint over the surround chrome.
Nope, noway and cant do it. Three out of three wins in my book.

Where did you get your Surround and Bulge for $390? The best I can find is $500+

It was a platinum take off from sparks Toyota. I know their prices have changed. I personally think mine was cheaper because it is not a popular color.

I'm painting mine with a single stage color match 1G3. I got a good deal on a grill with a black surround and had already planned on painting the bumpers, so I figured I'd give it a shot on the hood bulge and see if it works out. I've seen people having good luck getting chrome off plastic trim with oven cleaner, which is what I'm going to do. Worst case I have to get a new hood bulge and I'm not out anything extra other than time because I'll be doing the bumpers, which I don't believe will be a problem to paint. Got some self etching primer as well.

I painted my chrome corner caps myself using paint from automotivetouchup.com and was a perfect match. It’s been over a year. They have been through snow, salt and car washes without any issues. I got it done for about 50$ and looks just as good as factory painted. It’s definitely not rocket science or hard to do right.

wait? You painted over the chrome? Did you sand down the chrome piece first before priming it?
