I’ve had the ARE-Z topper on my 2018 for the past couple of years and it wore the paint down to the bare metal nearly all the way around the perimeter of the truck bed outside of and under the plastic bed rail caps. It’s starting to rust a tiny bit too and I’m looking for some solutions.

    03F51AA5-B4F0-475D-8F45-D8CC5E11769D.jpg

Had I known this would happen I would have never bought that specific topper, but hey it looked slick AF.

-getting the bed rails repainted (whole perimeter and under the plastic trim) is going to cost ~$3k

-alternatively I thought maybe of getting that area Line-X’d and it'd be $600…way cheaper…but then the bed rail caps wouldn’t go back on too well (or at all) because you’re effectively raising it up a few millimeters by the thickness of the Line-X.

Any ideas?? I’m about to get a GoFastCamper installed and need to figure something out soon.

Will that area be visible with the go fast camper?

Yea it’s visible. The camper rests on top of the bed rails and doesn’t hang over. I’m More concerned about the rust over time though.

The lowest tech way is to get a bottle of Toyota touch up paint and use it on the bare metal sections and call it good. Next down the tech tree is to use a paint refinishing kit which involves polishing the clear coat to even out most of the scratches (after applying touch up paint to bare metal), however that location will make this difficult as its so close to the top rail/edge (example the "3M scratch removal system" SKU:39071). Then using a 2K clear coat in a can (example "SprayMax 2K Glamour") will fill in most of the remaining imperfections and make it look pretty good. Obviously a paint shop for X amount would be the best. I've done this on a few major side scratches and looks good, takes like 2ish hours to do. Feels better than paying someone knowing I'll sideswipe another tree later haha.

In my experience with a professional paint shop, it’s more affordable than you would think. I had my 1980 F150 entirely pulled apart full paint job for $4k (in 2015 dollars). Not very similar to your situation- but I can’t imagine a spot repair like this being more than 800-900 bucks. Personally, that would be worth knowing it’s been done way better than I could ever do it. Can’t hurt to at least get a quote!

I'd go with Ponderosa's suggestion of using OEM touch up to cover it (maybe after lightly buffing/polishing to get a good clean surface). Then, I'd pull the caps and clear wrap underneath them and overlapping the newly painted areas. I'm thinking that, similar to like fender flares, it would offer more protection against any potential rub spots.

I agree with something along these lines too. If there is a high chance something similar will happen again, I’d hate for you to spend the money getting that spot painted and professionally blended.

I like the line-x idea. Nice clean line that would look fine plus save the cost of redoing the bed rails. Touch up painting will look a mess when you're finished, imho.

I agree with @sask3m. That touch up is gonna look messy. The line x idea sounds best to me, and just omit the bed caps altogether. Who knows what it looks like under those as well, since you had all that weight on there already. When the go fast camper goes on, you’ll have to use some kind of adhesive backed insulation to separate the bed from the camper, unless that installation already calls for it.
One more idea- I have used a lot of Raptor liner - the DIY truck bed coating. My vote is prep and do it yourself with color matched Raptor liner if you have the time. Should cost around $200 with all prep materials and product.

I guess I was thinking the aerosol cans of touch up paint. Sanding, priming, sanding, painting, clearing and wet sanding yourself.

Not the touch up paint pen just to clarify.

But that Raptor Liner is great too, I used that on my fiberglass bedsides for the top rail. Super easy to use and get a good looking end product.

This would be the way i'd go about it. It is more time consuming but its not particularly hard. I don't use touch up paint except for very tiny and isolated paint issues. If you use it on the whole area its been rubbing it will stick out.

Raptor liner is quicker and still better than touch up paint imo

Where are you located ? I am a painter for the last 20 years and 3k does sound a little high but do plan on replacing rail caps as sometimes they do snap underneath and also the stickers on the side ! If you were close I would say we would take care of it for about 1/3rd that cost

I had the same issue. Here's what I did.
1-Removed bed and tailgate caps. Essential
2-Wiped the affected areas with a rust remover. (You must remove ALL rust. This is important)
3-Sanded affected area with 600 grit sand paper
4-Masked affected area and sprayed four coats of spray on bed liner.
5-Let dry. Reinstall bed caps and tailgate cap (optional)
6-Enjoy knowing I'll never have to deal with it for as long as I own the truck and I did it all for $20 worth of spray on bed liner :)20211116_135028.jpg 20211116_134828.jpg 20211116_135034.jpg 20211116_135034.jpg 20211116_145722.jpg 20211202_120216.jpg 20211202_120201.jpg 20211204_111222.jpg 20211204_111253.jpg 20211204_111241.jpg 20211207_155944.jpg

I’d ask the line-x guy to spray it and be done.

    thanks all!

I’ve decided on doing the Raptor liner myself. ~$150 in materials. Seems easy, straight forward, way cheaper than a paint shop, and will be preventative against this happening again since another camper is going on the bed.

looks awesome man. Good work. This is basically the same thing I’m doing now that I’ve decided to raptor line it. Did you reinstall the bed rail caps when you were done?

Sanding done and tape removed. Re-taping now with painters paper for overspray and going to prime it with the raptor 1K pro primer. Then the raptor liner goes on 25CBA848-A491-46EA-9C59-6F103F59A35E.jpg

Thin-ish coat done. Going to let it cure for a few days in the garage before putting the bed rails back on. There’s a little bit of magic marker noticeable at the raptor line seam. Will buff that out later 42793BF1-D97D-4877-BFA3-62BD4DE01484.jpg

Bought a 2020 Tundra and pulled the folding bed cover system. I have an ARE MX ordered, but i learned with my Tacoma, its a good idea to pull the rail caps, clean, and apply foil tape over all those holes. When and if i reinstall the caps, I will silicone around all the punch points like i did with my Taco.

Funny, had similar issues on mine to a much smaller degree, and was thinking about doing the same thing. Would love to see pics of it with the bed rail caps reinstalled if you have any.
