Random question. With VVT on this engine, how hard to give it a ghost cam? The inner child in me is curious

Based on my ovtune with my tacoma, no a previously tuned truck does not need to be stock. The code will overwrite it.

Currently, as far as we know, not possible. (may be possible when we find the tables required).
Toyota has a method setup that limits the angle of one cam based on the angle of the other cam, even though both advanced or retarded would not cause mechanical damage.

So when the intake is full advance, there is a limit on exhaust advance, and vise versa.
It is possible, and even better with some modifications to the transmission. We did a supercharged truck with built trans and it shifts very fast and crisp, no sloppy shifts like stock that feel loose.

Depends. If you have the dimsport my genius thing, you should flash back to stock first. Otherwise the handheld would be a brick.
If you've been tuned in person, we can flash over it.

price is available on our site.

Understood. Would this group buy be open to people like myself who don't need new hardware but do need the tunes? Understandable if not, I imagine it would complicate the GB a bit.

I looked on your website, and it says you don't have this available for a 2019 Tundra. Will that be available soon?

2011 Tundra 5.7FFV Magnuson SC, previously BD Tuned. First impressions after I flashed the tune and proceeded to do some data logging for Matt to review.
Fired right up and ran smooth idling about 700rpm...100rpm lower than the previous tune. Off idle throttle is smoother and less abrupt than before. transmission shifts much like it did before the BD tune...firmer with less slip and hunt. I have not played much with tune#2(towing) and will add additional thoughts here at a later date. Gear locking is the real deal and pretty cool :)

Power wise it almost seems that the truck has a bit less now, but again that could simply be how smooth the delivery is and the transmission shifting properly. Will edit and add more later...

Edit: After more thought...the full throttle pulls I did were in Tune#2(towing in lieu of performance), gear locked as requested by Matt and that tune is supposed to be a bit richer(safer) and as such should be down a bit on power.

Agreed! The 5th gen definitely needs the tune more than my Tundra.

    Mat,

Another tuner said these trucks are very sensitive to octane ratings and that the ECU is very quick to pull timing. They recommended running 91-93 even if you are stock. Have you seen any data to validate this?

Thank you for the logs. The base map (starting map, before any logs) is setup on the conservative side until we can see the first set of logs. Then we will dial it up from there and bring back the power :).

    Who said this?

The stock ignition system is a bit rudimentary. With your basic Low knock Table, High Knock Table, and Limiter table (MBT).
Obviously there is a lot of factors involved.
It depends. Some of toyotas vehicles seem to like to ride the knock sensor right after a flash, but that's pretty normal. It will collect knock sampling data to determine it's corrected knock factor.
Yes the ECU will pull quite a bit of ignition out on huge knock spikes, but this is not really unique to toyota. Any manufacturer does this.

I would say a stock truck does not need 91 or 93 to run and function properly. You *may* get some knock sometimes, but in the real world ALL engines knock sometimes. Running 91 or 93 octane without tuning the areas of ignition where you can get the most benefit from it is a bit wasteful, as the ECU won't "adapt" to it, it will just run a higher KCLV value and target the Low knock map.
But this low knock map is still 87 octane oriented.

Do we recommend 91/93 on a bone stock truck? Not really
Could a bone stock truck benefit from running 91/93 when tuned for it? Absolutely.
