Ok, @OVTune just tried normal (not tow/haul) S mode. I can select and hold gears, but the TC still doesn’t lock and hold. As soon as you’re on the throttle, it unlocks. Any suggestions? Is there a fix for that? With the TC unlocked, there’s not really a benefit to holding a gear; the transmission builds a ton of heat.

Granted I had the original version of GL (the one that required me to have the Tow/Haul button on), but I know that my TC wouldn't stayed locked. I noticed the same thing, where temps would rise. If we can keep it locked I can see the benefit to having the most amount of torque we can have available for when we need it. Otherwise, I will downshift to save my fluid.

Not that my confirmation is needed, but same with my tune. The tc has never stayed locked. I was hoping this would be looked into.

I just thought that GL was supposed to hold the gear, not lock the TC too...I guess I'll watch the video again when I get home...

It is, but the question has been asked a ton of times, and I believe the response was that we could. Otherwise GL is just to show higher numbers on the dyno, because it will just increase temps

I forget a lot of things o_O and simply don't recall reading that. But fwiw, locking the TC wasn't mentioned in the Tundra features video. Ah well :hattip:

Just got my truck back from the fuel pump recall. ECU is still 0CP50. No change.

Yes, that's why I purchased the tune. Hopefully @OVTune will respond with an update regarding how we can have the TC locked when in S mode. My goal is to lock the TC and hold a gear, to avoid building up heat on hills while towing. If it won't do that, it has no value for me.

I just wanted to quote this and bring it back to the forefront...the thread talks extensively about TC lockup being a feature with gear lock...which is why I purchased the tune. Looking forward to hearing from the vendor on implementing this in my base 87 octane tune!

Yes, torque converter lock was a huge selling point. When I had my truck on the dyno, the tq converter stayed locked. But not since then.

remember all of the times I’ve asked Mat this question and never got an answer... tq converter staying locked should happen

Oops, I see the previous post from Mat quoted :poking:

I’ll return to my cave now

Well if the TC doesn't stay lock I'll be passing on the tune. One of the major reasons I wanted it along with the GL. I pull a TT in the hills and need to keep the heat down.

Just for the record, my tune (which is about 9 months old) and had the "original" gear lock where you press tow haul in S mode DOES lock the converter. I use it all the time while towing, and it is very noticeable since it can be in 5th unlocked and press tow haul and it drops rpm and locks up, and I can floor it and it'll stay locked up in 5th (or whatever gear). I haven't received an updated tune since then (supercharger things take longer it sounds like) but if the current tune isn't doing it, it's not because it can't be done.

This thread and the OV hate threads make me feel like I'm the only one that ever got a functioning tune. It has it's quirks, but ultimately it seems to have the features Mat said it would at the time and those features all worked great right out the door. Maybe my truck just lucked out lol. Hopefully you guys get it sorted out.

I’m sure he’ll get it sorted for all of us. It’s why I bought the tune too, and what it was advertised to do.

Same here...TC lockout has been working well for over a year. I am more than happy with OVT's tune and looking forward to the update!

Fully locking the TC is no problem. The problem is first getting all ECUs working to make it work.

The only other way is the old method of having it lock when you press Tow button

Ah yes, the unpredictability of the various Toyota ECU programming within a vehicle model. I don't tow often enough nor heavy enough to fret about transmission temps, I'm content to give Mat the time to make it work how he's planned.

@OVTune So is that something we need to specifically ask for? Does it only do full lock up in tow/haul mode? I haven't had a chance to try it with tow/haul on mine, but I know it doesn't stay locked in 5th and 6th in normal/S-mode. #5177

So, my tune was just the tune. Somehow it got mixed up I’m assuming, as I have no GL/DS.

    I’ve got an 87 and a 91/93.
I’m rolling with the 93, and the truck feels SO MUCH better. Not lethargic- responsive, power is there when I need it. Hardly downshifts anymore.
I drive the same routes weekly- I know how my truck operates. If all I got was this base tune, I’m happy.
But once I get GL+DS, I’m gonna be stoked.

I drove my buddy’s truck that has a bullydog tune on it as a comparison, and mine just drives way better. His feels like it’s got a tiny bit more on the upper end, but, it shifts harsh, power and isn’t near as smooth- very pulsy.
Refined, but responsive- How it should’ve driven from the factory.

    Very happy!
Looking forward to adding on the other features.

Just my opinion here... but maybe it would be easier if Matt got away from doing "tunes" and focused solely on jailbreaking the ECM.

Sell the VF Tuner package and provide a basic tuning tutorial for users to do it themselves. (like HPT)

This will keep OV Tune from having to deal will bullshit complaints about individual/personal preference issues.

    Just my two cents.

That’s exactly what he’s doing and the move to vF..

The early adopters still get a tune though.
