As far as being locked down, I thought that was the whole deal with the credits to unlock your ecu?

Locked down by Toyota. Not OVTuning.

Tuning to an ECU can't happen until Toyota does an update. Once that update is done, the vehicle can be tuned.

For you to unlock your ECU in VFTuner, you need to have credits to unlock your particular ECU to be able to make adjustments. If you don't have the ECU unlocked in VFTuner, you can't tune it. If Toyota hasn't released a update to allow your ECU to be tuned, no amount of credits will work in VFTuner.

    Clear as mud?

There is definitely an update to cal 0CP81,
but if Toyota dealerships give you the run around, I can unlock the ECU on the bench. Then we can support 0CP80 and 81.

Dealerships for some reason really really don't like flashing updates to trucks. Go read the Tacoma forums about it. They straight up lie to people saying updates don't exist. I tell my customers to print the TSB and bring it and the dealership "magically" finds it!

I have had to bring a paper print out of the tsb just to get them to do an update.

Hello. There is over 4000 posts here. I clicked on the OV tune page. There is a "Tuner Software for $200." Then a "Tuner Software & Flash Cable" for $380. Then some other options. What is the cheapest price option to get a tune for a Tundra?

    Thank you.

Did you not read what I said LOL I had it on MY tacoma. It most definitely is not a different truck... hence why I bought the Tundra. The tacoma was a placebo effect for sure. It may have made very minute changes but not enough to get over how poorly the truck drove. The tundra drives 1000 times better than a tacoma with or without the tune.
Now I did live in a hilly area where the tacoma just lugged itself all the time, the chevy I had didn't.

Apparently i missed that part :notsure:

My Tacoma, it is a night and day difference. I wouldn’t go back to the stock tune. The 2.0 tune is how those trucks should have come from the factory.

YMMV depending on mods and driving style. The AT needs gears from the factory IMO, and if you do lift / tires you definitely do. Tuning can only do so much.

I would like to take them something printed out but I have not found anything backing me up with having an available update. I might talk to @Roman to see if he can help. I'm in his area often for work so it's a little convenient.

I was thinking that if we were able to find the TSB/Recall Number, then we could at least search for that. Can anyone say definitively if ECU updates are TSBs (my guess) or Recalls? That would be a start anyway.

Update: After reading a little, it seems that if Techstream is connected to the vehicle and a Health Check is performed on the ECU, it will bring up calibration updates if they're available. A dealer is going to ask you to pay for an hour for this check, and presumably the update at the same time. Whatever their shop rate is.

BMW Group is like this as well. Once a vehicle is in under factory warranty they don't like to flash updates, they'll claim nothing of the sort exists despite what the customer may have heard, even when you bring in a TSB with the service code they can be hesitant but they'll usually take care of it. Once the vehicle is out of warranty they find any possible software update available for it and charge you extensively for it.

Have the updates been suspended again? I kinda thought people would be posting their thoughts, like "cool", "works like a charm", "functions as advertised", and "A++".:D

Well, with the update he sent out, shifting in D is really improved, smoother, even over the original tune, which I had thought was great. No more hunting for the gear upon accelerating after turning a corner. Before it didn't seem to know whether to accelerate in 1st or 2nd, (normally opting for 1st with an immediate shift to 2nd, awkward!). Feels now that it stays in 2nd with normal acceleration after turning the corner. And the accelerator pedal seems a bit less sensitive, which I appreciate. But I still don't have the fix for "S" mode for my 0CJ64 ECU, so can't comment on the gear lock, direct shift and TC lock features.

Sounds good. I've noticed my trans shifting a little different, so hopefully this changes mine too.

BTW, any idea when we might see tuning for the 2020?

I just came back from a ride and I ran through the S mode gear lock and direct shift test per Matt's description by "NOT" pressing the Tow/Haul button and they both work but when I push the Tow/Haul button they do not work. I asked through Zendesk if I have the features with the Tow button on and off but his only reply was on how to check it. He seemed irritated because I said it did not work so he was going through the test procedure for me as follows...

Put the truck into S mode. Don't push Tow button.
    Floor the truck.
    Does it downshift?
    No?
    bingo, gearlock.

    Press the shifter UP.
    Does it upshift?
    Yes?
    Directshift.

if you upshift near the limiter there is going to be a 100-300 rpm delay, the transmission will shift as fast as it can but it isn't instantaenous.

So that is what I did to check it. That did not answer the question about with the Tow button. I would like to have the features in both modes. Not near a place to go off road so I am unable to check the 4WD changes that are no RPM limits and in the S mode starting in 2nd gear.

You can always just find a patch of dirt, and floor it. Seeing the video from Victor G, HPTuners has the option where it just limited the amount of throttle you can give (I think it was 85% up to a certain RPM and then only 3X%). This way you can see if that is working.

    This is the video.
