I've got a bunch of different bbq's (Webber Genesis (propane), Big Green Egg, and Traeger) and its kind of just spread over the corner of the patio. It would be awesome to build everything into an outdoor kitchen with a concrete counter top.
    upload_2018-4-24_7-54-13.jpg

    upload_2018-4-24_7-54-36.jpg

After some quick measurements, i did a quick drawing of it in CAD
    upload_2018-4-24_7-55-13.jpg

I thought about making it out of wood because its what i'm comfortable with, but i needed something that will last a very looooong time. I thought about brick or blocks and steel frame. I came across Bbqcoach.com and they sell "modules" in varying sizes with pre-cut lengths ready to assemble. I watched for them to run a sale, and when they did, i jumped on it. It was about $1k for all the frame with the cutout kits for all the appliances. (in hindsight, i should have just bought a shit load of steel framing and saved some money, but ohh well).

The Egg drop down will look similar to this:
    upload_2018-4-24_8-20-51.jpg

I've been gathering pieces for about a year and a half. I finally have the big pieces and can start building it.
I ended up finding a great deal on a Napoleon Prestige 500 and went with that. I tried to go on the inexpensive side, because 90% of my grilling is on the BGE, but man, built-ins are EXPENSIVE. You can go to lowes and get a freestanding (pos) grill for $100 but its hard to find a built in under $1k.
    upload_2018-4-24_8-15-25.jpg
For the side burner, i wanted a double burner, so i went with Blaze double burner
    upload_2018-4-24_8-18-55.jpg

I also bought some stainless steel doors, one big double door to go under the grill, and two smaller single doors to go on each side of the Egg drop.

Last night i decided to unbox all these pieces that i've had sitting in the corner of of my garage taking up space and start assembling. I started with the largest piece, the 8' module. The ends came welded together, and just needed to run the runners and studs. Everything is secured with self tapping screws.
    upload_2018-4-24_8-25-41.jpg

My hopes is to do a little bit each day. Next up, i need to unbox the grill and start the framing for where it will sit in the 8'er.

Some things i still need to figure out:
I have an electrical outlet and gas stub out near where the slot drain is, so i'll have to wire/plumb everything from over there.
How do do the concrete counter top (suggestions).

    4/25/18 update
I started to frame in the supports for the grill last night. It was a bit of a pain to make sure the perpendicular runners were square and the gap between them is the right width for the grill. I still need to run a lower support, test fit the grill........then the point of no return......i have to cut the length between the two perpendicular runners.

    upload_2018-4-25_8-35-25.jpg

    4/30/18 update
I was hoping to get more done this weekend on the kitchen, but a mixture of running errands, going to the movies, and drinking too much, i only got a couple hours of work done on the kitchen. I picked up some synthetic deck boards from HD (fuckers are expensive, $25/12'er), and got them installed under the frame so if water ever got under it, there's no problems.
I'm not sure if it was all the drinking the day before, but i was having a helluva time working the driver. I picked up a set of Milwaukee magnetic bits/bit holders, and they kept jumping off the bit under light pressure. I started to think a couple screws were cursed. I think what was happening was that the metal shavings were getting picked up on the bit, and even when i cleaned it off after each screw it the screw wouldn't sit perfectly on the bit. I switched back to a non-magnetic one and it went more smoothly.
I did my first "point of no return" cut on one of the 8' runners for the refigerator. I double checked my measurements and went for it. I'm not sure if i made the right decision to put it all the way on the right (going to be hard to put hardy board and tile on that thin strip), but i wanted it to stay as far away from the grill as possible.
    Q_0J8Vyj63v1LaCy_IWk0niGMlgaCBwf_Oj5VFSJ_f8d4dbfc48642853ee0caa5fb7d8a85adf028f47.jpg
All that's left for this 8' section is framing in the double door below the grill cutout, and making the cuts on the 8' runner for the grill and burner. Then i'll start assembling the 7'er.

    5/5/18 Weekend Update
I had some time to work on the second side of the kitchen this weekend and was able to get it wrapped up (I still need to cut the runner along the top of the BGE cutout).
    EOmBBO1b75o8htuPsN1yCj0Mo6bwJfsvpD8NKXrO_a3268e4ec72e60443113622cb1d072d595df92de.jpg
I needed to get out of the house so i headed down to HD to grab some hardy board and supplies (the fence boards are to make a pad on top of the deck boards so my storage areas will be off the ground). Man, those sheets are heavy.
    H-FJ3Bgn_s35bprc1SeTK_L5niIBjbdYvhH4An9s_983a5f7c21135f2b81a376495e73b3692741db03.jpg
I figured that it would be a good time to take everything out of the garage and into the backyard so i dont have to try to move them with the backer board on them. Trusty hand truck to the rescue.
    UUHLzgQLj3YZ-6c8VgGFnVIHU8iPd-YsQX4p-SBB_9d18f26b8d87dfbbfdfec6e323d45b125d7e7937.jpg
And roughly placed in the backyard. A good milestone. I think i'll probably make a perpendicular runner to go along the L/R of the egg cutout (the left side in the picture below) to support the concrete counter top and the same above the fridge (far right).
    XlR8fk6EtTefQKEivrqCO4tGNE9wKmZQP-uGL4gv_c419c5a6b17014f5f8bd0622ec49f059949cf146.jpg
My next step before i put on the backer board is plan out and do the electric wiring and gas plumbing. Before they poured the slab, they added an outlet and a gas stub out to the right of the track drain at the edge of the slab.
For the gas, i'm thinking that i will put a valve at the end of the stub out and run flex hose to the grill and side burner. For the electrical, tap into that outlet and run a conduit all the way around and install 4 outlets. I bought some of these guys:

Those of you construction guys have any advice?

    6/11/18 Update
Over the last month, not a crazy amount of progress has happened. I was able to get the electrical and gas lines roughed in, and worked on the connection for them.
With the weather being amazing yesterday and mid/upper 90's on the horizon this week, it was a good time to knock out the backer board yesterday. My friend that works construction recommended using a diamond blade on an angle grinder to cut this stuff. Man, it cuts like butter! So glad i didn't try the Score & Snap method.
I ran out of screws when i was about half way done with the left side, so another home depot run today to grab more to finish it off.

Next up, i'll put a 2x4 around the perimeter, flush with the top surface for the countertop overhang. Then some sort of wood (not sure if i'll use meleamine or regular pine) attached to the 2x4 that sticks up 2" for the countertop thickness.

If i can get my ducks in a row....concrete next week (but its a stretch).

    6/22/18 Update

I ran a 2x4 around the perimeter flush with the top of the backerboard to give a lip for the countertop. I then grabbed some 1x6 square edge pine and started to place it around the perimeter of the 2x4's. I first tried marking a line 2" (for my 2" thick slab) along the 1x6 using a framing "T", but man, trying to get that to line up with the top of the 2x4 and be level was not working out. I ended up getting it close and figured that it was more important to be level than exactly 2" tall.
All in all, i was able to get it level front/back and side/side.

I still have the backside by the saw to do, and the shelf for the egg. Other than that, i've just been mentally planning for the concrete countertop (that i have never done before).

For those of you that have done this or work in construction, let me know if i'm making any mistakes:

10-80lb bags of Quickrete 5000 Plus
Acrylic Fortifier (i read it helps to adhere the glass pieces to the concrete)
Welded wire mesh (Remesh) floating in the middle of the slab
Not sure about adding a color. Might just keep it gray.
Blue crushed glass - Probably use tempered fire glass.
Silicone the corners and use wd-40 for the release around the inside of the 1x6's

I'm going to use a paddle mixer and a big party bucket to mix the concrete.

I'll have my grandpa that did construction for 30+ years come over and show me how to do the troweling.

    Update 7/14/2018
I grabbed 12 bags of Sakrete 5000 plus, 6 bottles of charcoal dye, welded wire mesh, and some silicone calking (more on this later) from Home Depot. Side note: the 1k lbs of concrete didn't even make the rear sag much, very happy with that.
Last night i went through and laid out the reinforcement. My crappy little nippers didn't stand a chance, so had to go get a proper pair of bolt cutters.
    nqgYx9FkGmGFc45AIDqoOXZdekhoUhikX3Bw-V8I_dc7f1671ac9a1bdc407bf210724a195abef6d4c1.jpg

Everything i read online, people would put a bead of silicone on the edges and corner to "soften" the edge. I did a shit job first of all, and second of all it didn't really do much other than make it really hard to get the forms off.

    Pour Day:
I called up the old man, and my grandpa that did concrete work for 30 years, and we started the pour. First batch we tried mixing 2 bags at once, and it was a mistake. Too hard to get the mix just right, but we did and started with the pour
    hIK2kqBRfdvemewtm0dA9xToGSnPnENqLMyCnc3U_388b8b23f6f13212e6c699ceee5ab75d159a96d7.jpg

We slowly made our way around and i could tell my grandpa really enjoyed showing me the ropes. I've inspected miles and miles of concrete roadway work, but trading my clipboard for a trowel was quite an experience.
I ended up using a palm sander without any paper on it to try to get the air bubbles out. Seems to work well if the concrete is still "green".
    X-iHgJMhaOAV9YeLUeyMIlZU9J73DgpVG-gBrwof_4ba7622b23afe9dc594231d5a1738b13a801937e.jpg

Once we made it all the way around and the first part we poured had started to set up, i sprinkled crushed glass, and tamped it down with a wood float. Then we steel troweled over it to smooth it out.
    PE9s7lpWLMGfjMOeYY2Ozn2k7ELC8vVBaf56qOxu_5449c30cb7321ec3509eb738702547ca059da637.jpg

Then it was time for a couple slices of pizza while everything sets up.
I had planned to leave the forms on for a good while, but was convinced that i didn't know my ass from a hole in the ground and boy i'm glad we didn't wait.
We stripped the forms piece by piece and having a 90deg edger made it reallllllly nice.
    Vy1nyUMXIAL4Di9OZaEw-tXaUW5uf6SN_-ISaZoJ_c3852d14875f7f68062620978dd574eb5ad74550.jpg

I've got plastic covering it and using a spray bottle to mist it every couple hours. Its really hot out today, so i've placed umbrellas around to try to shade it as much as possible.

I'll probably keep the plastic on for a couple days and keeps it damp. Then i'll let it rest for 2 weeks and then use diamond pads and a variable speed polisher to start exposing the glass and aggregate and give it a baby butt smooth finish. The a shit load of coats of sealer.

To do concrete countertops you will have to build forms for them. 1/2” or 3/4” Cdx base and 2x4 frames for the perimeter. Another cool thing to do is install a 45 degree angle inside your forms. So your bottom countertop edge has a bevel to it. Watch a few online videos for them before you attempt to do it.

I've watched a ton of videos....i think i've got it figured out, but i'm not sure about where i should seam it, and how to go around the post in the corner. For edge treatment, i was thinking of using something like this:

It's gonna be heavy if it's 8' so start buttering up your friends now. There are a couple "how to" books on concrete counters that can be helpful and give you some great ideas. Melamine, though expensive, will release well but you should still wax it before pouring. You can add colors to your concrete mix or use acid stain after it cures. Often counters are ground after they cure to reveal the rock or whatever else you put in it. I like @1UPPER 's idea about putting a creating a chamfer in the form but you're close to Terico tile (Junction ave) where you can buy things like diamond round over bits, grinder and polishing pads and bits.
I'm doing a concrete floor in my MBA with Koi fish tiles and lilly pads. The control joints are radiused to emulate ripples in water. Have Fun!

You can pour in place. You just have to be creative with how you build your forms.

I'll need to still research. The wife likes the idea of having a textured face to it, but i'm fine with a flat one with rounded corners.
I was thinking of using Melamine for the frame (thats what i've seen used on videos i've watched). On a HGTV show, the wife saw some people adding different colored glass and then grinding/polishing the living shit out of the top to expose the glass. It seems like a pain in the ass, but it looks great when done.

Yeah, sea shells.... Whatever. Outside, in a border I poured to retain pavers, I set an old, brass, clock gear, it has 4 spokes so I oriented it to indicate North. Whatever you can imagine. I recently read about phosphorescent pearl that you can add to a clear coat.

Make sure and wear a good respirator if you grind the concrete and glass. You will definitely breath that stuff in. The glass does look cool though.

    I'll definitely buy a good 3m one.
How i've seen them add glass in, is they sprinkle it, and tap it down with a trowel. After it cures, go through and wet grind and polish it down. I'm hoping its that easy :notsure:

Looking nice! I just finished mine a month ago. I did it in block and saved alot of money. I then used that to add granite in place of the concrete counter tops that I was going to do in the first place.IMG_0706.jpg

Looking good - I already have a bar with grill built in but extended the patio to add hot tub and now just need add a bar to that with an awning. Always looking for ideas.

Thanks! I did everything except the granite. I didnt want to chance breaking a piece and having to pay even more. Other than that it was all me
