I've seen a lot of people asking about ideas on how to get an RTT on and off without the help of a buddy/sig Other... After a failed attempt to build a crane/hoist, I came up with a much more simple idea that seems to be better than any of the other options I've seen to date.

    Here are the materials needed:
    3 - 2x4's or 2x6's
2 "bike" hooks (the ones for hanging a bike in your garage
    2 Eye-Bolts and a few lag bolts
Pulley system (I used a $16 Harbor Freight gambrel/pulley system)

One of the Eye Hooks is screwed into the eve of my garage and the other is screwed into the cross-rail of the 2x6's. The bike-hooks are on the end of the 2x6s and grab onto my rack.
The 2x6's also have some lag bolts used as "stops" on the lower end of the rails so it won't slide off when I lift it all up.

Should be self explanatory from there... Lift the back end of the rails and then slide the RTT into position.

Great idea. Ingenuity at its best.

It's hard to see them, but here is a zoom-in of the bike hook ends.

And here is the pulley end... Note the cam that I have attached to the house that holds the rope for me while I slide the tent on. You could also use those cleats that boats tie to a dock with, or you use for the string on your blinds.

And I would think you pre-drilled holes for all the hooks since they are attached on the ends, that way they don't split?

Now that I know how well this works, I have a few minor tweaks I want to make.

#1 - Shorten the main rails by about a foot.
#2 - Miter-cut the bottom ends so they sit flat when they are at an angle on the ground (so I can get the tent on a bit easier)
#3 - Use a thinner rope. This one was binding a bit in the pulleys
#4 - Drill the holes between the rails and the cross beam deeper (right now none of the 2x6s are bolted together so that I can disassemble fast and store easily).
#5 - Wrap the bolts that keep the RTT from sliding off with duct tape so they are "softer" against the RTT
#6 - The eye-hook is parallel to the rails, but I want it perpendicular so that again, the rails sit closer to the ground. Right now the eye-hook hits the ground before the 2x6 cross rail.

You are 100% correct. Gotta pre-drill your holes.

You could even use a piece of wood or L bracket to keep the RTT from sliding instead of a lag bolt..

Yeah, I like that L-Bracket idea!! Def gonna "steal" it from you.
I could even bend them down a little so that they lay flush on the ground when the tent is being loaded.

If I can ever get far enough with my truck to get a RTT, I'll definitely rig up this to put it on the rack. Thanks for sharing OP. By the way, your truck looks BA, at least the back half of it! I ought wander over to your build thread...

    Great job, Jeff!

Sometime when it’s not attached you your truck, can you take a close-up pic of the eye bolt and bike hook attachment?

Well after taking the tent off the truck yesterday (took less than 15 min), I've come up with some additional tweaks that I want to do that will make this process even easier. I'll post up the results when complete.
