I've decided to take up Trail Running.

I'm 47 (now 48), cycle to work all spring/summer/fall (25km daily), stay in decent shape but am NOT a runner and have never seen the draw to it....until now.

We live right beside one of the countries largest urban forest and is full of endless trails, marked and unmarked, wide and single track. It is frequented by joggers, dog walkers, bikers but everyone is there to stay active and enjoy the outdoors.

I went out yesterday for 30min, 1/3 jog, 2/3 walk and could hardly feel my legs this morning. So today was full walk, 60 min, 4.5k.

2021-02-03 * My NEW goal is 38min (up from 30min) full out jog with dog by mid-March and lose 5lbs of winter weight. * Goal met on 2nd run, 32:45 *

2021-02-18 * goal of 30min for 5k trail run by mid-March. Winter weight can stay on, it'll come off when I start cycling to work again. * Goal met on 2021-03-27 with Martha, 5k, trail, 29:18

2021-03-27 * new goal 28min by end of July

Long story, short...the dog park isn't working out for us right now due to an over excited dog and clueless Covid dog owners. This activity is probably a better bonding experience for us and I'll benefit more then sauntering around the field.

Posting for my own accountability and to track my progress (or failure o_O). I have most of the gear needed already from cycling, just need a decent pair of trail shoes.

    A few pics from today.

Everyone is different but here is my experience.
When younger I had to get in shape for Academy. Terrible shin splints, injuries , etc.
I got back into it by only running every other day. Just say MWF. Weekends walked.
On wednesdays I did 5-8 100yd sprints only after a slow 10 minute warmup jog.
All injuries went away and cardio was through the roof. I mountain bike all the time and it was a tough balance for cement legs. But injuries all went away for years and ended up being able to run trail races up to 10miles at a good clip 7-8:30 minute miles depending on elevation drop and gain. I miss those days.
I can’t run distance anymore due to unrelated knee surgeries and injuries from work. But I still knock out sprints on grass . Best of luck. I miss it terribly.

Doesn't help me exercise the dog though, which is my main purpose for taking it up. She can't be trusted there off leash yet with deer and the odd coyote.

I'm hoping it won't totally trash my knees with the softer trails, a decent pair or shoes and my slow pace.

I've done a bit of reading online and your experience, echos what most people online day for people new to running. Every other day, let your body tell you when to ease up and give rest days.

It would be a lot easier for me to say I'll just exercise the dog with walks around the neighbourhood, but I know neither one of us would enjoy that or get much out of it.

I'm trying be optimistic and get excited about it and hope I can make it work for both me and the dog. I know she's enjoyed the past 2 days.

Yeah, it is something I will definitely keep an eye on. And who knows, once the dog is trained enough to be trusted off leash in a forest setting, I may revert to just hiking and walking her there as she runs around and does all the hardcore exercise.

As with everything BALANCE IS KEY! Do not exceed what your body is designed for or sit around and have your 5 snacks. Staying active is very important and there are many ways such as park and campground clean up, habitat for humanity, etc. that not only keep you active but you make a contribution and freinds at the same time.

As a former marathon runner and still occasional runner, I have only one recommendation - STRETCH! Devote a good 10 minutes following every run.

If you're not over doing it there's no reason to worry about knee injury. Long term there's no evidence of running causing knee problems outside of accident, poor form, or overuse.

Word of warning it's REALLY easy to over eat while running a few days a week. Only time I've ever lost weight running was while doing Half Marathon training and running 45-50 miles a week. Keeping a tab on your food is a better way to cut 5lbs.

A couch to 5k program would be a good place to start.

Im going to give you the most important piece of advise. Get some Hoka’s.

    https://www.hokaoneone.com/trail/

    I am 6’5, 230lbs (I think 104kgs) and I run. I run 5 miles in 30min still and I’m 44. I hold 8min pace for marathons as a Clydesdale. That’s flat land not trail or mountain obviously.

Anyways, I ran Brooks beasts back in the day then went to ASICS then went minimalist style for a year to see if the theory was legitimate and now like every other ultra runner or farther distance runners and older jointed people, the Hoka will be the best thing you can do to your body. The Salomon trail and Merrill trail shoes are garbage compared to the Hoka One Ones. I have worn the Hoka boots on multiple mountains overseas in snow and water and rock and whatever and they are amazing. Other companies are also making Hoka based soles as well so you will see similar designs out there also. So take your pick. They look weird at first but your body will instantly thank you.

Thanks for posting this. I need to get to back to jogging the neighborhood with pups this year. The only problem with them is they push me too hard . I've been running on Brooks Ghosts, but need to go check out the Hoka's at local shop for sizing.

Not knocking Hoka as they are a great shoe but talk with the folks at a local running shop. They may have other selections for you that may be better in the long term and a good shop will have a return policy if they don't work out for you.

Also listen to your body. If your feet, ankles, knees start bothering you after switching shoes they aren't the correct fit for you.

    Go for it.

The past couple days were so much fun, for both of us. Ours pulls like a 50lb tub boat, she's all muscle and energy. I have no doubt she will get trained well enough and know to run beside me soon. Even by the end of day 2, she was much better.

I'm actually looking forward to getting home from work today, even when it's -27c and going for jog with her. Legs are still a bit sore, so I may opt for walk and a few sprints, as was described above.

Let me know how it goes.

I started out running with my pups when we adopted a 6 yr old German Shepard. She absolutely loves running but turns 9 this year is finally starting to slow down a little. My big problem now is our 2 yr old Belgian Malinois. Her favorite chew toy these days is an old motorcycle tire that she carries around the backyard. I have a belt harness and splitter that I can use to run the both at the same time. But I'm probably going to have to re-start solo, then work up to one at a time before I tackle running with both of them.

May want to look into Altra shoes. They have some great trail shoes and you can pick your level of cushion. They help me. normally do a 2.4 mile run 5 days a week on asphalt. And have decreased knee pain for me.

Good job and enjoy, but if you think 47 is old I have bad news for you. At that age I loved trail running, Xterra races, etc. Fast forward 16 years and I have trouble trail walking, lol.

    Seriously, relish every run now.

Marathoner and triathlete here. As a former running coach, I always advise to make a gradual build-up of miles/time. I prefer time rather than miles, but most have trouble with that as it not along their line-of-thinking. Let your body adapt to the stresses of running. If you have a base of cycling, and cardio is already built, don't let that push your physical structure too fast. Some good points were already suggested: make sure your shoes are a good fit, proper arch support, etc. Take rest days. If you want a good read, check out "Run Less Run Faster." I tend to agree with that books approach to running.

At 56, I still run 3x a week, cycle 200 to 300 miles a week during warmer months, and race fat bikes during winter. Genetics have a role there and I have been lucky. I have some nagging injuries from youth stupidity (my 40's) and not listening to my body and taking proper action. We all have a born-on date and expiration will happen. Just be smart about it.

The Kenyan national team can’t outrun a Belgian. You need a wagon to ride in behind that pup.

I'm not doing to it loose weight. I have a normal BMI and weight/age/height appropriate. I'm about 6' 180 and get down to as low as 170 in summer with cycling. The 5lb loss will be a bonus if it happens.

I'm doing it to enjoy the outdoors forest that is basically in my backyard, spend some time with the dog and just try something new. I also want to motivate a few other people in my family to get active, who aren't and try to improve their health in a round about way. Show them how much I'm enjoying it and the benefits of active living and maybe it'll be contagious.

4k walk with some sprints today. It was -107c again, but we bundled up.

I have a couple pairs of shoes coming from MEC to try, Hoka and Altra. Until then, I won't jog too much as my legs can't take it and my current footwear doesn't cut it.

Had a blast again. Amazing scenery for being in the city and Martha loved it PXL_20210126_220330430.jpg PXL_20210126_222931488.jpg PXL_20210126_223539033.jpg

1st week done, made it. It wasn't always easy to get out when it was so cold, but I always felt good once I got going and even better when I was done. Much better than laying on the couch watching TV or playing videos games after work.

I have been doing more running but taking it easy the day after if I was at all sore. Not feeling nealy as sore after runs as I did that first day though, a couple more weeks and I should be able to go for a full out slow jog without too much trouble or worry.

One pair is shoes came in. I may have to hit up RunningRoom and talk to them in person to get fit and buy from. These feel great around the house but I'm not sure how they "should" fit. Snug, wiggle room etc.

Did 6.3k mix of jog and walk today with Martha and had a blast. Saw a few other runners and one guy even in shorts!

I love running. Been loving it since I was in school. I have a hard time getting motivation to do it with such a busy life. I’ve always been off and on with running. Will do it regular for a couple of months and then get sidetracked. After reading this thread I’m going running tomorrow morning. Thanks!
I’ve found that I can jump right back into it, no problem, just need to be careful of how many miles at first. Cardio I can run a bunch of miles but at 58 now I do feel it in my knees if I increase too much.
Will do 3 miles tomorrow and see how I feel. Thanks for the motivation!
