So I've been having an oil pressure problem with this 04 tundra thats got me doing circles. I started loosing pressure I saw it in the needle but I felt it as well. I changed the oil pressure sensor and it got worse. So I switched it back to the old one and it stopped fluctuating but it got stuck how the pic is. Which is at idle. I already fixed the wire and still nothing. Any help??

Find the schematic for the Oil Pressure Sensor circuit and find out where the grounds are located. I bet a dollar it’s a bad ground.

The 1Gen Tundras seem to show really low oil pressure ~ so does mine but it's not off the chart low like in your pic.
Maybe you could satisfy your curiosity by temporarily installing a gauge to read the PSI of the oiling system with the engine running.
    Just a thought.

I rewired it because it had gotten eaten up by the belt and its just one wire running to the sensor but I can't find the fuse to the sensor. And I've been stuck 40 miles from home so I have a couple of tools for quick repair but I'm going to have to go buy a back up set

Best case is you recheck your splice connection and make sure its proper. Worst case (not bad) is you go without an oil pressure sensor. Never heard of our trucks suffering a problem from pressure assuming you’ve proper fluid levels.

I checked oil and its fine. But the oil that that sensor spit out was way darker. I want to check the wiring but I need to add some because its at its limit. Does anyone know the right gauge size

It’s not common, but the cluster do fail.

my coolant gauge sits in The same spot as yours because the motor died (well lost its center position)

The coolant is fine the gauge works on that. Its the oil pressure that sits on the H of the temperature

I realize you put your old sensor back. Was/is your new sensor OEM?

According to autozone it was an OEM but it looked different so when it threw it off I drove for a little thinking it had to adjust itself but never went up hire then that. And the original isn't leaking or anything

I was stating that just the cluster servo can fail in any of the gauges. Could possibly be what your experiencing

The color (lightness/darkness) of the oil is irrelevant.

It's such a small amount of current that any wire would be fine. If it was me, I'd just grab a length of whatever I found in my parts bin. If I had to go buy some, I'd probably go with 16 gauge -- which is way overkill for this circuit -- because the extra left over is handy to have around.

Well I found the corporate and sad to say its the oil pump. Send a video to a couple buddy mechanics of my engine running and in less then 5 min they all replied oil pump and to turn it off

Not sure how your mechanic buddies were able to definitively diagnose your issue from a video. Especially with the evidence of a chewed up wire from the sending unit. Is the truck overheating? Making horrible tapping noises? What was the video evidence you sent them?

Same thoughts here. I’ve never heard of an oil pump on the 4.7 going bad. Open to learning about this.

I've got an '03 4.7l Limited and my oil pressure gauge looks identical to yours Arlie26. I've got nearly 300thousand on it and it runs just fine. The people I got it from said it has never worked for them either but didn't have the money to take it to a dealer. Knowing that; if the engine had no pressure, it would freeze up tight, I decided to just leave it.

doubt its the oil pump. seriously think its a defective gauge cluster. the stop point should be higher than its currently at. my coolant gauge is doing the same thing.. thats what i keep trying to say. lol WAY cheaper to find a used cluster than condemn and replace an oil pump

engine off, which will be 0 pressure, the cluster should show pressure like this.

anything below that - points to a cluster issue... unless somehow your oil system is now under a vacuum?

We have 2 "my first post ever" commenters that their oil pump is behaving the same way. Any one else with experience with this? First I've even seen a thread mention it.

I assume there is a way for your mechanic buddies to attach a tester of some sort in place of the sending unit to make a definitive ruling on your oil pump? Also, wouldn't the truck throw a code for low oil pressure? P0521 maybe? Don't know....just asking. Good luck!

Can a mechanical gauge be spliced in somewhere easily? I would be checking everything else before committing to an oil pump. I could be wrong but you might be able to view oil pressure via the droid Torque App with a OBDII reader.

First time poster as well. This is the first time I’ve seen a recent lost regarding this so made an account. I have a 2001 tundra 4.7 and my gauge just doesn’t work. Sits at L whether the truck is running or not. It used to work 8 or so months ago, then it would go from no pressure on the gauge back to normal while driving. I turned my radio off to make sure no noise pulled over no leaks, everything was fine. Continued to drive it and nothing was wrong. Been driving it since. Recently I began to dive into it more so far I have replaced the sensor (new oem sensor) that didn’t fix it, bought a new cluster from a pick and pull since I have read the cluster goes bad sometimes on these, that didn’t fix it either. Pretty sure the wiring was fine from what I looked at but I have had 0 issues with it. Starts up and drives fine. No noises, etc etc. interested to see what the outcome of this Thread is to get mine working again since I don’t like things not working how they should

On my 3rd toyota pickup. 2 of 3 seemed to have an abnormally low oil pressure at idle or low RPM including my Jade. Not uncommon at all. Nothing to start replacing parts over unless other serious syptoms happen.

The 2UZ oil pressure spec minimum is crazy low somewhere around 4psi at idle.

Situation Normal with the low pressure on our engines.

This broken gauge thing is a head scratcher, though.

Have you inspected your wire from the sender (lowest point/one skinny wire) all the way up the harness to where it turns and goes under the A/C Bracket. Reason I ask is because the last mechanic that did my Timing Belt didn’t route the wiring harness properly. The accessory belt then cut a nick into the harness at that point. Fortunately, I caught it in time as only the jacket was worn into. Maybe a cut higher up the harness?

I checked the first 3-4 inches of the wiring closest to the plug but have not checked the other portion of it just due to it getting dark so I figured I would wait and just put it on a loft at work to check the rest of it out. I have recently found a few posts of that issue as well. I’ll probably do that either today or early Monday depending how much work comes through. The timing belt was done about 5-10k miles before the issue started so may be on to something with that

after using my truck everyday, my gauge started working FYI. It will probably fail soon again when it fully breaks or the connections rust out.
