I'm finished with the "free" Toyota Care oil changes, so the next one will be the first time I've changed it myself. I have two questions:

I've seen reference to the 5.7 holding 9.8qts and I've seen reference to 7qts. Which is correct?

I saw a thread the other day where someone bought a nifty-looking tool and replacement "cap" for the oil filter. I can't seem to locate that thread now... Anyone remember where that was?

    Thanks!

Fumoto valve is what you're referring to.

I've seen those before, and they are cool, but that's not what I saw in the other thread.

I *think* it was a u-shaped tool for removing the filter housing (instead of using a flute wrench). And it might have been a replacement housing too... (scratching head)

I recently bought a 2010 tundra and checked with my local dealer about changing oil. I was told they would change oil (oil & filter included) for $59.95. I don't think I can change it myself and save much. I'm going to give them a try and see how it goes.

Okay - who was the crackhead engineer that designed the oil filter such that you have to remove the skid plate in order to access it??? Good grief. A total of 8 bolts that are 3 different sizes? Really?
Has anyone given any thought to using a 4" hole saw to create an opening below the filter housing so you don't have to remove the skid plate to change the oil?

Im using it as an excuse to buy an RCI or TRD Pro skid plate because they have access doors to the oil filter. It's a total "coincidence" that I will need to change my oil right around January/February (tax return time).:bananadance:

I did see a thread on one of the forums where a member modified his OEM (not TRD) skid plate to have an oil change flap like the TRD skid plate does, but I can't find the thread. If I find it, I'll post it here. Most are just migrating to the TRD or RCI as Kevin (BlueFalconActual) mentioned.

UPDATE: The one RowdyRon posted below is the one I was thinking of. Thanks!

It's an elaborate ruse by Toyota in order for us to spend money on TRD Pro parts. Silly Toyota, I don't need more reasons to spend my money on mods.

Yes. That mod I believe is has been addressed here already. I don't change my own oil anymore so I don't worry about it, I let Grease Monkey worry about that. Not worth the expense/hassle DIY oil change anymore IMO.
