Alright the truck is in the bay now and I was wrong it's not a 2025 but 2023. Engine sounds sad though. It had a high pitch screech noise while trying to run. Almost like a worn out drive belt on cold start.

Can you elaborate on how the truck "belongs to us now"? Is it within the warranty? If not, do you know how Toyota addressed this with the previous owner?

Just to recap, it got traded in because the owner wanted to get rid of it due to bad engine. Sales person was under the assumption, regardless of mileage, this truck will get a new engine since it's all part of the recall anyways. Little did the salesperson realized the Hybrids are not part of the recall --- yet! Hence, accepted it and got stuck with it knowingly it's out of the powertain warranty. Luckily, we still had the owner's info (presumably title and not sure what else) and with the extended warranty that we were able to get it covered and ordered the parts. I don't know how it all worked out in the end, just relaying the info I have. Now I didn't ordered the parts, so there's still a possibility it's going to need more stuff.

Tomorrow I will go in and get the engine out and investigate what happened to it, as this one will be of most interesting to us and our FTS guy to see if it's bearing related or not. I haven't looked at its service history yet, nor do I know if the customer bought this truck from our dealership or not. Our FTS would be really interested to know as well as to determine and see what happens from now on for the Hybrids.

I am also very interested, being a hybrid owner who is not under a warranty. Like to see how it failed.

This has been a fascinating thread to follow along on, @auaq , thank you so much for taking the time to document this tear down, assembly, and install of this engine.

Is the extended warranty with Toyota? If so, what happens if the hybrids are then included in the recall? Would this truck be eligible for the crate motor?

My guess is the hybrids will never be included in the recall because Toyota has determined they don't present a safety risk, and apparently NHTSA agrees. They would have to rescind that determination, which is highly unlikely, IMO.

If so, failed hybrids will continue to get the short block rebuild. If they fail out of warranty, the owners are screwed.

Still don't believe Toyota would just tell me to pound salt if my motor fails. It's a known defect. I think they would offer some kind of resolution, just not sure what.

Good luck with that. I thought the same thing when my wife's BMW X5 engine blew just out of warranty. Surely a reputable company like BMW would take care of a valued customer, right? I learned the hard way that BMW, and the selling dealership, doesn't give a rat's ass about their customers.

This is the cold hard truth. Once its sold the dealership typically doesn't care - once the warranty runs out the Manufacture could care less.

It's not up to the dealership. I deal with Toyota directly, and they have in the past helped me with items out of warranty.

They paid me $12,800 for my 2000 tacoma (with over 200k miles) bc of frame rust. The book value of that truck was about $3,000. I only paid $21k for that truck new.

Have you seen the maintenance history on this truck yet?

Not that it matters much, but there are still hybrid owners who think their gas engines are somehow immune to bearing failures unless they've been neglected.

Best of luck - I will say Toyota does more for their customers than most other manufactures. I wouldn't worry about it if i was you - get an oil analysis at your next oil change and just keep driving it.

Why bother with oil analysis? Several failures had been doing analysis that showed all good, until it wasn't. I don't believe these are slow building failures, seems like they are OK one minute, then they go boom.

ya, its not conclusive, Eddie had a shit load of silver and his didnt go boom before replacement .

thats 100% the problem here, there is no rhyme or reason or way to know if anything is coming or not, you can be driving anywhere and poof, it spins out.

luckily, I made it on my long drive across the US when I moved and also my Vegas trip both driving out in the boonies.

Im still just waiting for the mothership to tell us the plan, my truck was like the next one off the line after the 1st recall vin spread.

That is the most troubling about this entire situation - doesn't seem like Toyota knows or is not wanting to disclose at this point. There are people driving over 200k miles on engines that should have been recalled - others that are going boom with a few thousand miles and some with 50k miles that have their engines pop - really weird.

100%, we are just left to wait for the mothership or trade, which sucks with the resale dive.

I was fine and in the just drive it camp for a long time, but after this long, Im worn out on it.

    just kinda stuck right now.

I will not be buying another tundra until this is 100% resolved for sure for a while, maybe even a full model year.

and thats saying something, look at my trucks.....

This is my first toyota and funny enough, I'm used to the shit resale and lack of manufacturer support with my chevys. Luckily I only bought Gen3's from 00-05 and got the best damn gen ever. But I saw the lack of support when the first DoD engines started failing and the 6L80s started going too. Im one year away from paying this thing off and IDK what I'll be getting when the times comes, definitely not sold on toyota.

    2023 White Capstone Hybrid | Round 2 | Bearing(s) are kaput

Alright quick update on this motor. I've only gotten to see the front main bearing and not the rest of it yet. It was a stopping point for me on Tuesday night and decided to tackle both oil pans later on to get a broader look at other bearings. That will happen tomorrow. I didn't wanted to take the same tons of pictures of removing and disassembling the engine as you all have already seen what it takes to do all of that. Just wanted to get right down to the main culprit and investigate what happened, and then see what happens next! Once I get in touch with my FTS guy and address this issue with him we shall see what the engineers or Toyota will do about regarding the recall. I just have a hunch that they still won't cover the Hybrids and just carry on with the current trend of that 25TA14 recall. There's probably still a big disparity of failure rates between the non-Hybrids and the Hybrids that they might not consider covering the Hybrid owners - yet! Will just have to wait and see, but on a personal note this is just bad in the grand scheme of things. Anyways, let's just carry on with the following pics. I had forgotten to look at the service history about this vehicle and it'd be interesting to see the complete history from the date of purchase and location, to brief summary report of every services done so far.

    Enjoy!

    The main culprit so far.

    20260203_175231.jpg

    20260203_175222.jpg

After removing the front piece timing cover and taking a little peak to see that there's presence of bearing material everywhere including up in the cylinder heads.

    20260203_172921.jpg

After removing the valve covers - silver glitter!

    20260203_172957.jpg

    20260203_173005.jpg

I've already posted a video link to that one half of the front main bearing shell sticking far out. See post #106. I was able to wiggle it with my bare fingers and could grab it with the plier and in fact pulled it out. I then stick it back in so as no to lose it. The other half was still in place. Obviously, we're seeing signs of spun bearings and tomorrow I'll see if the adjacent ones have spun as well. I'll also be looking for any signs of discolorations on the main and rod journals too. However, I don't intend to remove the bedplate this time as long as I can see some signs of spun bearings and any other damage. All this will be documented. On the last motor, I took it upon myself to dig deeper than I was supposed to just out of my curiosity and science as well.

Now for some slight, non-related off topic pics.

Here I have two 1/2" drive impact sockets. Both are 22mm sockets. One is your regular looking one that you can get everywhere and everyone has one. The other is actually a heavy duty 1/2" drive socket that's meant to break loose the crank bolt if you can't break with your regular impact socket and even with the best impact gun you throw at it. I have one for 19mm as well. Some crank bolts are just super tight. This socket has a lot of weight when you hold in your hand which helps to break loose that torque. Works all the time.

    20260117_102327.jpg

    20260117_102331.jpg

Lastly, our snap-on tool guy showed up with new tools in the house and left us with this brochure. A couple of us were keen to know how much would this total 12 foot long tool roll cart would cost if you add every option on there. Believe it or not, it ended being over $82k without taxes and without the 25% discount. With taxes you're close to $90K. I said to the tool man this is as same as purchasing a brand new, top of the line Tundra Capstone.
