OEM Tow Mirrors on a 2017 (issues?)

My local dealer just told me that it would be a crap shoot to add the OEM tow mirrors to my 2017 after the fact. They told me that there are like 25 different possible wiring harnesses that are used in the Tundras, so the OEM tow mirrors may or may not work depending on which wiring harness is in the truck. He said the harness is about $3k, and they can't take returns on the tow mirrors if they end up not working. He said if it didn't come from the factory with tow mirrors, then aftermarket mirrors will be my best option.

I read on another thread of one other guy being told the same by his dealer. Anybody else hear this, or know if there is a way to identify if the truck has the correct wiring harness?

I also just got off the phone with K Source, and she said their mirrors will work, but I will only retain the factory options, even though the mirrors will have the turn signals.

Your dealer is full of $hit. Tow mirrors are plug-and-play. For SR5, you will gain turn signal function as well as marker light. For some reason, higher trim Tundras don't play nice with tow mirrors (they lose marker lights and BSM doesn't work), but for an SR5 Tundras, it's one of the easiest mods.

I am not familiar with K Source mirrors. If what they tell you is true, I would stay away from their products. (But even after-market tow mirrors are plug-and-play)

I just purchased a 2017 Crewmax and dealer is adding tow mirrors prior to me picking it up in 2 days (Thursday). They don't say anything about an problems. Did you call another dealer. Doesn't seam reasonable for a company to use so many variations of wiring on one vehicle . Second if they change wiring harness mid year its usually to add more connections for additional features such as side camera's, lane change warning sensors so its all same wiring for all models. Just my opinion

I haven't called another dealer yet, but I am going to.

I have read on here this is true for the older Tundras, but I haven't been able to find a post confirming it's true on the 2017's.

Here is my experience from installing OEM Tow Mirrors on a 2016 Limited:

OEM Tow Mirrors are plug and play. (30 minute install for both sides.) You will keep power adjustment and heat. You will gain turn signal (even if you didn't have it on your original mirrors). You will lose BSM (even if you did have it on your original mirrors.)

Thank you for this info. I think I may just order them and find out. There is a guy at work with an older Tundra who is also looking to buy tow mirrors, so I'm sure I could get him to take them off my hands if they don't work on my truck for some reason.

Thanks. I had some aftermarket ones on my Chevy, and the glass vibration drove me nuts. Wanting to stick with OEM this time provided they will work.

Other dealer just told me they will work, I would just lose power fold and memory if my truck had those options from factory. They wanted $289 per mirror though. Time to order from one of the vendors here then.

When you ask a dealer "can you do something", what they hear is "do you want to do something". They almost never answer the question that was asked unless they see a profit in the answer. Your SR5 doesn't have many of the "features" of the higher trim levels, so best case it would be plug and play. Worse case you may have to run an additional wire or two for your marker lights or heating elements. Your basic functions like motorized adjustment and turn signals should work fine.

Possibly true in a lot of cases, but I didn't even want them to Instal them for me. I just wanted them to order them for me. :)

For SR5, you will retain heat function and power adjust. You will gain marker light and signal light.

If your truck came with BSM, you will lose that function. For some odd reason, upper trim Tundras will also lose the marker light. Power fold function is available but that requires buying a set of tow mirror with that function (typically twice as expensive).

I am not sure what the latest updates of some after-markets tow mirrors are. When I was shopping for mine, I read some people reporting vibration with non-Toyota brand. That's why I went with Toyota brand.

My local dealer asked for $150 for just for installation so I did it myself. I am not a mechanic, but even I found installation pretty easy. The most difficult part for me was to making sure to not let the screws that holds the mirrors fall into the door panel (some people have done that). Other than that, it was pretty easy.

wondering if any factory tow mirror comes with BSM? maybe that functionality is considered useless when towing!
what about the expensive platinum or 1974 models with tow mirror, they must not have BSM either!

compared to competition, Tundra is always behind in gadgety stuff ... but we buy it for mechanical reasons! :D

Check out A1 auto. They have several mirrors. I was looking a few months back. I have the platinum and u don't think they had tow mirrors with all the same capabilities of my oem mirrors. I think they do have BSM but I don't think they came with power fold and visa versa

Anyone on here have the 1A mirrors? I am about to pull the trigger on a set of tow mirrors as well and the price of the 1a looks great if they don't vibrate at highway speeds.

I have one of their non towing mirrors. It's fine, seems as solid as oem except the glass is clearer, not autodimming but after a week I didn't notice. I have heard mostly good things about their tow mirrors

Blind spot monitoring. Vehicles that have it, a light comes on, on your side mirror, indicating a car is in your blind spot.

I watched the video I saw on here, and it looks way easier than it was to swap the mirrors on my Chevy. $420 (darn sales tax) seemed pretty fair for the OEM's, so I went that way vs aftermarket.

I ordered mine yesterday. I can't speak from experience (yet), but I dug through every Tundra site I could find, YouTube videos and google and read nothing but good things about the 1A Auto tow mirrors as well as constantly seeing they're as good as OEM.

I'm one of those guys that goes OEM everything when it's available, but for some reason here I just couldn't justify the extra $200 when every review was positive and a couple side by side comparisons showed it was identical to OEM.

There's a good video somewhere on the interwebs of 1A Auto comparing their tow mirrors vs. other aftermarket versions and it's pretty clear it's a top notch aftermarket part.

Oh and 1A Auto commented on most posts backing their products and asking anyone with questions/issues to contact them back to 2013. The other aftermarket mirrors I saw had complaints of buyers not being able to contact the sellers with issues so take that for what it's worth.

Hope this helps and saves you the couple of hours I spent researching

That 's funny. My 2011 only has 3 wires going to the mirrors. Power adjust AND THAT IS IT! I have been told and read many times that all I need to do to upgrade is add the full feature mirrors. No additional wiring needed. That is a bunch of bullcrap. The dealer is right.
