Does anyone sell a bolt-on mounting bracket that fits the first gen's axle housing? I'd like to use an OEM rear swaybar due to cost, but my axle didn't come with the swaybar brackets welded on.

According to this post the outside diameter is 3-1/8" https://www.tundras.com/threads/axle-tubing-size-wide-tundra.57923/#post-1514709

Here's an example of brackets for a 3" housing https://www.umiperformance.com/2244-aftermarket-rear-end-sway-bar-installation-kit/

Even if you could find one, 1st gens didn't come with OEM rear sway bars. Maybe you could fabricate something to install a 2nd gen sway bar, but I haven't heard of anyone doing it. Hellwig has been the go to for rear sway bars for 1st gen Tundras.

I believe there was an OEM rear swaybar, but the details are fuzzy for me. It may've been a TRD package add-on or something that came on Sequoia or ???

Pretty sure it requires welding/fab if you didn't have it stock, to weld a mount plate onto the axle housing.

From what I've read they came on some 2002-2006 2WD only, possibly "TRD Sport" and the Terminator. I've also read that there might have been a dealer bolt-on TRD rear swaybar for 2000-2002, but haven't found any solid proof.

Yes, the OEM bar came with welded brackets. This is why I am asking about bolt-on brackets in my first post.

Yeah, Hellwig is the only company that sells a bolt-on version I'm aware of.

It used to be a reasonable ~$200 for our trucks. Last time I checked it was north of $500.

Just like w/Bitcoin, I wish I'd gotten on the train a little bit earlier.

Actually, w/Bitcoin, I wish I could find the hard drive I had ~20 years ago with several coins on it, from when I was running a miner on the company servers... but hey, that's another story of fortunes lost...

    I stand corrected.
Maybe. But looks like you'll need some fabrication skills, which if you don't, costs could easily reach Hellwig prices. Even if you do, it's going to take some time and money. Might be a wash either way.

That's a rabbithole I've been down, with the pedal covers.

It may be in catalogs, you'll likely never see it again. Just like the 'big brake kit', it's going to be a total fucking miracle (bluntness intentional) to find it. Similar to the OEM NOS floor mats I sold in the 1st gen parts section recently, it's all "unobtanium" at this point, and if you can manage to find a single one, it's a needle in a haystack.

And there you have the reason Hellwig charges extortion pricing on their item. If there was a no-drill/no-weld rear swaybar on the market, I'd definitely have purchased and installed it already on my truck. I just haven't seen any kit out there that mimics OEM, and isn't a convoluted, haphazard bolt-on solution that looks like ass once installed.

My ADDCO rear sway bar has been excellent and cost me around $270. It did take three months to arrive, however.

EDIT: after a quick google it seems that the ADDCO has been discontinued. Shame.

    Still available: https://www.addco.net/product/toyota-tundra-2wd-4wd-2000-06-rear/

I might try contacting Addco & Hellwig to see if they'll sell just the axle brackets. They're Addco "RH328" according to their instructions. Hellwig doesn't list a part number.

Or I can always get something fabricated at SendCutSend.com and use Dorman 35624 U-bolts.

Interesting. If you order a sway bar or parts from them, call first and ensure that they're actually in stock and ready to ship. When I ordered mine, they said that they were in stock but they actually didn't have any, and they didn't send me mine until three months later, after lots of pestering.

The mounting situation is super simple and you could definitely recreate it with some U bolts, flat steel strips, and a good bench vise. Not sure where you'd get the bushings but you could possibly reuse the OEM ones.

Interesting how the Addco sits on top of the axle, vs. below on the Hellwig. I'm surprised there aren't clearance issues. Is that mount really just 1/4" flat plate with some slotted holes? From their instructions:

    Screenshot 2026-03-29 210135.png

Hellwigs mount as shown in their instructions, which I'm now noticing appears to be universal and not cut to the exact axle diameter. Note the V shape where it contacts the axle.

Yeah, it’s just a flat plate with two slotted holes for the U bolt. There’s another piece on top of the slotted plate that holds in the rubber bushing, but that’s it.

I personally prefer the ADDCO design as it’s tucked up and out of the way. Not that I off road often, but I feel like the OEM and Hellwig designs would get caught on branches, rocks, snow, etc. I’ve never experienced a clearance issue and I didn’t even need to remove the brake hose for installation.

I have seen the factory bar on a 2003 4x4 step-side sport that was nice, but way too small for my needs. The Hellwig bar that I installed on my 2002 is actually the bolt on TRD design made by Hellwig with end links located in front of the axle similar to how the factory sport bar end links were attached, both were discontinued rather quickly. Until a few years ago Hellwig still supported it with revised end link hardware, I'm sure that support has ended as well.

I used a rear sway bar off a GMC Yukon/Chevy Tahoe from the local junkyard. Fits perfectly!

And I used the stock front sway bar arms to fabricate and repurpose them for the rear

I used generic weld on sway bar mounts. They work with energy suspension D bushings. I think these were sold on a jeep site.

End links are from a corolla/prius, bar is from a 4runner. IIRC

TRD offered an optional rear sway bar that was standard equipment on the Terminator 3 Special Edition and the TRD Sport. I don't think any other trims came with them standard. But the mounts were welded to the axle and the clasps that held the bushings in place bolted to the axle mounts. The TRD rear sway bars are pretty uncommon and no longer available. You'd have to get lucky finding one. I'm not sure if you could easily adapt the TRD rear sway bar to an axle not meant for it. But maybe you could use the Hellwig mounts.

Isn't that 48812-AF030 in both cases? Or are you referring to a dealer installed TRD swaybar (did this actually exist)?

There's still thirteen on eBay right now: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nk___dkw=2006+tundra+rear+stabilizer+oem&_osacat=0
You can also purchase them new: https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/oem/toyota~bar~stabilizer~rear~48812-af030.html
