hey y'all i changed out my stock air filter for a K&N oiled filter today and i noticed this mesh piece that was on the intake side of the air box connected to the intake manifold side of the system.... anyone know what this is/ what the reason for it is/ and has anyone taken it out? to me it just seems like more air flow hindrance in the way of my truck breathing.... thoughts? reference photo below.(the white mesh in the top of the images) IMG_1853.jpgIMG_1854.jpg

It’s a carbon filter. Something to do with absorbing fuel vapors when you shut the truck off. I don’t think it hinders flow much. I took mine out but doubt it made a difference.

Here's a tip, IF, ya like, buy another K&N filter, cause when ya clean that one, ya have to let properly air dry, in case ya need to go somewhere or what not that way ya have a spare ready

Just leave it and have no worries. Taking it out will not gain you 16 hp or 0.8mpg

That's about where I'm at! If it works don't "fix" it! Thank you

No issues. Looking back I probably wouldn’t take it out now. But it’s out and over with so I’m leaving it that way.

I think I read somewhere that its only there to make the truck CARB compliant. I took mine out a few weeks ago. I took mine off out of spite.

This is what I suspect... but if it doesn't impede my truck's performance, I'm leaving it alone. From what I gather reading these threads is that removing this carbon filter is hit or miss on improving the truck's performance. One guy who removed it (in another thread) said he got a little better gas mileage, maybe 1 mpg better. But from some of the poster's comments in this thread, I see no real advantage to removing the carbon filter as there's no substantial, consistent, verifiable improvement in engine performance. In other words, it may improve engine performance a little bit, but it's hit or miss, so why bother?

My question is do you really see a difference running the K&N filter versus the factory filter. I know I noticed a difference when I changed it out on my SuperCharged FJ Cruiser but I wasn't sure about it on the Tundra.
