Very odd issue in my 2010 sr5 tundra. Getting gas and truck was running. Was low on fuel. As its fueling truck shakes and shuts off. Finish fueling. Try to start and very weird. Turn it to on then to start and it tries to start but when I try to turn key back one click it is still trying to start. Should have stopped. Turn off. Check battery..terminals.full.of crusty acid. Clean it. No change. Pull battery and get it tested. They say it's good but its 6 years old. I replace it. Put in truck and same thing. Volts show about halfway on the gauge which is almost normal. I notice positive terminal cable is broken on one side so I replace. Now when I turn key everything lights on dash, volts Look good. But I get absolutely nothing when I turn key. Checked a bunch of fuses under hood. All good. Maybe I missed one? I'm lost..any thoughts ?

There’s a fuse panel under the left end of the dash too, I can’t remember off the top of my head if any could apply to your situation, but worth a look.

Well, the alternator assists in power distribution, so if your vehicle is not receiving power and having difficulty starting or running, the first place I’d check would be the power distribution center.

additionally, the starter would be worth a check.

There's a fuse panel by the left knee above the ebrake. When you checked the fuses under the hood did you check for voltage or visually check them. With the key turned to on the 10a ign fuse should have voltage present.

No..dash lights up fine..nothing. no click.. no anything when I turn key to try and start. This is different than when I first had the issue. At some point it went from some starting sound like a weak battery then to nothing at all when I turn key. Odd.

I checked a bunch of them visually but that was before the nothing when I try to start. I will try to check them again tomorrow. What fuses relate to starting the truck?

+1 for checking ignition fuse (s). Not sure what type of starter we have but if its gear reduction it won't necessarily make any noises when it dies, and may die suddenly (found that out with the matrix I had owned).

What puzzles me is it dying while fueling.. stalled out. Then would not start almost like a fuel issue. Tried to jump it and not able to. Then replaced battery. Then hardly a crank. Changed positive terminal and now not even a cluck

Why was the motor running while fueling up? Having a modern gas engine run without the fuel cap tightened is a bad idea.

So I just did a quick internet search and I belive it is gear reduction. Could be the starter from what you describe. Coincidence. I certainly may be wrong as this is just my opinion.

However, I would still check fuses and check if there's voltage to starter.

Could have stalled out for some type of vapor issue while fueling especially if hot outside.

Edit: re read OP and don't forget to check starter relay.

When you turn the key to the ON position can you hear the fuel pump prime? I'm guessing your pump sucked up the garbage in the bottom of the tank and something got clogged.

If the starter won’t even crank I’d say it’s probably that. Hit it with something and then try to start. Also, you shouldn’t fuel up with the truck on. Bad for fuel pump.

I believe the starter relay is controlled by the computer. It sounds like it's acting funky. I don't know what the computer does if it doesn't recognize the key. I think it'll turn the engine over but no spark. I think I would get a code reader and see what the computer is saying and reset it.

I would check your battery connections again and the cables.

It will stall out if the voltage gets too low.

I wouldn't bother looking at the fuel system if the even wont even crank over.

+1 on smacking the starter. You may have to do that with someone holding the key switch to the start position. It may take more than one smack to get it going. If that is the problem.

How is this bad? We did it with patrol cars, I do it in my TuRD with my SD inside... curious.

EVAP system needs to be closed (sealed) to avoid throwing a check engine light.

I've been fueling Toyota cars & trucks (8 different ones) with the engine running for 25+ years. Never had a problem or issue.

Not sure about it stalling while gassing, but the rest sounds like a starter problem. Sounds like the same thing that happened to my buddys camaro. After 2 days of trying this and that, he pulled the starter, and found that it was toast.

Same here. I've got to think that the computer must give some leeway with detecting that since the truck isn't in motion, don't throw a code.
