Took a long ski trip through Colorado, Utah, Montana and Wyoming back in February. Along the way I noticed gas stations selling 85 octane fuel at a good price. I live in Southern California and my user manual says to use 87 octane. If you purchase your Tundra in one of these states offering 85 octane does your instruction manual still specify 87 octane or are the engines adjusted for the lower octane?

Probably the few dollars you save filling up the tank is not worth losing the peace of mind. Gas is cheap in the US and even cheaper right now

Back in prehistoric times, when I was in collage, the internal combustion textbook I had said use the lowest octane that doesn't cause spark knock. I generally follow the manufacturer's recommendations, but if it's worth it to you to save a few bucks, have at it and see what happens.

Due to the elevation and thinner air, you are fine to run 85

I burn it all the time in CO. You loose absolute compression in high altitude so lower octane burns without predetonation. Turbo engines need to stick with 87 though.
