My understanding is that the GPS info is always used to maintain position. But in addition the vehicle uses its own motion sensors in the wheels to supplement the GPS. So for example, the GPS readings alone would not give a very accurate speed indication when you are just crawling along at a few miles an hour. The GPS readings have a fairly high uncertainty measured in feet or even tens of feet (hundreds of feet in some cases). But supplemented with the internal wheel motion data, such speed readings can be very accurate and not bouncing around

In summary, The VIM switch should be kept in the 1 or "on" position for normal operation. Turning it "off" or to the 0 position allows access to functions normally locked out while in motion. Once the desired input is completed, VIM should be switched back to the "on" position to resume normal operation.

If you're interested in a bit more Geek-Speak as to the how and why, then read on.... but remember you had the chance to stop reading here!

The VIM signal is a pulsed signal that increases in frequency proportionally to wheel RPM. This is combined with 2-axis accelerometer data and a vector solution of speed is calculated. VIM pulse counts are measured over time and heavily influence precise vehicle position updates on the moving map, even with accelerations and decelerations. If VIM is pulsing, regardless of the frequency, then the vehicle is assumed to be in motion and certain features in the HU are disabled; Nav destination, phone pad, setup menus, etc.

So when the VIM switch is turned to the 0 or "off" position, it turns off the VIM signal to the HU. The HU sees no VIM pulses and thinks that the vehicle is stopped. It also has no speed data to augment the Nav solution.

This activates "grayed out" functions and it also tells the GPS to quit moving the map vehicle icon. Even though the GPS is still internally calculating the updated position, and the accelerometers are still operational, they are essentially out-voted by the absence of a VIM signal, so map position updates stop. (Google "Kalman Filters" if you're interested in even more nitty gritty).

When VIM is left in the off position the GPS will update locations occasionally, but it won't be timely or smooth. At least that's my experience.

Once you turn VIM on again, the pulse signals will return, the Kalman Filter will be happy, and the GPS moving map function will catch up and resume proper tracking.

Some folks have reported that the moving map continues to work without a VIM signal. That is definitely not my experience and is the reason I recommend that VIM be left on most of the time.

For those of you who mounted the front camera on the emblem in the grill of your Tundra, how did you run the RCA cable to the passenger side of the firewall? Did you just run it under the hood to the back near the hinge? Pictures? Thanks!

No...sorry i should have paid a bit more attention to your truck:)....in that case i would run it on the edge of your hood (ie not going across the engine block) along the hingeand down. definitely make sure there is plenty of slack so you don't top them apart.

Curious so does this effect the automatic reverse camera that pops up when reversing? Or does this make it all manual now

Shifting into reverse always brings up the rear camera view. Even if you have the Front camera selected, the rear cam will override it in Reverse.
