I'm working on the brakes on my 2016 short bed SR5 Crewcab, 5.7L.
I noticed that when I applied light brakes and stepped on the gas the engine would not rev up.
My expectation was the engine rpms would run up a little and the engine would torque to one side. However, the engine wouldn't run up.
Does Toyota have some computer control that shuts down the engine when applying brakes?

Most modern vehicles have something like this. Be glad it's not a dodge that will throw codes and go into limp mode.

Question: why TF are you hitting both? Left foot braking is bad form unless you're in a race car.

I do, when crawling over rocks. Give it a little gas while tapping/stepping on the brakes, with your left foot, for more control - aka double footing.

Not sure what is up, my 2016 will powerbrake no problem.

Disregard my previous, humorous jab. I missed the bold part! :anonymous:

I checked it again. If I start with the brake applied and then step on the accelerator it will rev-up the engine. If I'm all ready rolling and apply brakes with the accelerator already depressed, the power goes away and all I have is brakes. I have to go to the Toyota dealer tomorrow for parts, I'll ask them if this is a feature, or is there something wrong. Seems very strange to not be able to do this. I've had this truck for 3 years and I don't recall every trying this in the past.

Fifty years ago as a teenager we would regularly apply brake and full throttle, then release the brakes and smoke the tires. Sometimes you'd break the motor mounts, sometimes you'd loose the differential but most times you'd smoke the tires. That's not what I'm trying to do now, I just want to double foot the brake/accelerator to load the engine a little.

Sounds like computer programming (safety feature) to avoid accidental acceleration during emergency braking assuming someone is on both pedals.

This is normal. That’s the brake override programming for the throttle-by-wire system. It all came to be after the “unintended acceleration” (alleged) events and was part of the recall fix that were a big deal in the Toyota world in about 2009.

Yep, Nov 25, 2009 as part of the runaway car thing caused by floor mats: this was one of the software updates:
    • A brake override system, which cuts engine power if both the accelerator and brake are detected as pressed, will be installed.

I'm wondering if they changed it on newer Tundras. I tested it coming to work this morning, going about 35, I let off the throttle, I pressed the brake and then also pressed the gas. The truck applied more power, but it did seem a little less enthusiastic about it. Maybe they refined it a little?

Reading your previous post I may have to test one more time by not letting off the accelerator before applying the brakes. I'm off in about 6 hours, so if I remember I'll test it this way on my way home.
