so I just received my REM polished 5.29 nitro gears from SDHQ. I already have front and rear arb lockers installed on the stock gears that will be used on the new gears. From what I have been reading on other forums and this one is that I need to use non synthetic gear oil. My question is for all those that have nitro gears and arb lockers what gear oil did you use? Sorry if this has been answered already just don’t want to buy the wrong oil. Thanks. At least I added pics on initial start of thread since I know threads are worthless without pics. Lol. Also, my rear lockers no longer engage, they just spew the air out of my arb diff relocation breather and compressor just stays on. Changed out air lines, used thread locker on the compressors fittings, replaced locker solenoids as well and it still happens. No leaks anywhere outside of the diffs. Front lockers are still fine. Since I have to open the diffs to repair the leaks I decided to buy the gears since I’m on 35s going to 37s and I weighed the truck down with all kinds of overland gear that lives permanently on the truck. Thanks for any help. 04153C09-F4AA-41A5-8313-DC978D0FFD39.jpgB0313C81-6DDD-4222-8639-9B3BC99F7125.jpgFE0CA5A9-9A54-4570-8956-73DC1CB3125B.jpg938F9574-805F-4935-8496-BB0E36F2C5BF.jpgC2CE7697-529A-45D7-9346-8ADB9FA72705.jpg

Follow Nitro’s gear oil selection. For high shock loads, I never use synthetic lube oil.

You have an O-Ring or collar leak. Welcome to ARB’s. Sorry man.

    Bad ass truck!!!

Thank you I’ll check what nitro recommends then. Are the O-rings or collar leaks a normal thing that I will have to fix every two years or so? The parts are cheap, but taking the diffs out to repair is not cheap. The rear went out after my last trip to the Mojave.

Just emailed nitro and will post what their response will be for anyone looking in the future.

I ran Nitro gears on several vehicles. Great selection. I used a GL-5 gear oil if I remember correctly. It’s been 5 years, so please use their recommendation.

A lot of air leaks are all dependent on install. I’ve had leaks after a year and others go 7+ years.

Ok I’ll look at my options on oil while I wait for nitro to get back to me.

Looking at arb lockers parts list and they say to only replace with BS138 Viton 75 ORINGS for the rear and BS136 Viton 75 for the front, but I can’t find any of those that are not on ebay from the U.K. weird that they don’t want you to use their orings.E6BF4A56-311C-430F-B7D6-2214EB0B0451.jpg 2B79EB60-8B22-4D4D-8B85-7B60529F623D.jpg

    Sounds about right. Lol

My last ARB was in 2001. Everything since has been Detroit or Grizzly lockers. Now of course, this would be a horrible option for a street driven truck.

This is my rear set of gears after 4 years of dirt nasty abuse, Grizzly Locker, Yukon Gear set, 5.38 gears, 40” sticky tires.

Any more use after this is just gravy. I have friends on their 3-4th gear sets in two years.

Oh man. This is my first truck and I have no experience with changing gears on a truck or on any vehicle for that matter. Not sure what to expect on how long gears are supposed to last, but I hope longer than 2 years.

I have Nitro 4.88's, but no locker or LSD. I'm using Lucas heavy duty 85w-140. There's a couple other guys on the forum with Nitros using the same oil. I got it for around $25 a gallon earlier this year. Looks like cheapest I can find it now is around $30. Thick stuff. Used a chemical sprayer to pump it into the front diff.

A set of properly installed and maintained gears should last for the life of the vehicle. I normally use 85W-140 conventional gear oil unless I'm going to be somewhere cold for a while.

I run Lucas oil on my Nitro gears, 70k plus miles and no problems I'm aware of. When I bought them I almost went redline but didn't want to use synthetic because my Kazuma LSD says not to run synthetic.

The o ring is why I didn't go for an ARB. Might not be bad as it sounds but having that pressure let loose on my axle housing doesn't sound good to me. If my rear end ever gives reason to rebuild I'll probably use the most street friendly mechanical locker I can find.

Ya I’m not happy about it cause the lockers weren’t cheap. Hopefully since I’m using a more reputable shop they can install them properly and the lockers seal last longer. Just weird that I can’t find the proper o rings that they recommend to replace them.
Thanks for the oil recommendations. I appreciate it.

I have heard ARB doesn't have great customer service. Hopefully you get that worked out, at least you're taking the diff apart anyway to regear. I would hate going through that just for an o ring.

I have 4:88s and a Auburn LSD. I called Nitro and Just Differentials and they both recommend using the Nitro 80/140 synthetic blend oil. The fluid also comes with friction additive so no need to add any.
