    Hi All..

I went through this a couple of years ago in purchasing a used FJ which we love. After driving a car for the past 4 years, I am ready to move over to a truck. It will be a daily driver (highway princess) for my commute and business use, but looking forward to having a larger vehicle for the family and road trips. I will be driving approximlaty 22,000 miles a year. Budget is under $30k, and definitely want a gen3 truck. The only "must have" is heated seats. If I buy a SR5, I will have heated seats installed at an additional cost. Not agains the Limited etc, but most of the ones I am finding in my price range have 80,000 and up miles on them and the prices are still $29-$32k.

After looking at a number of trucks it's almost like there is more of a price difference due to mileage vs the year of the vehicle. I have seen some 2018 models almost as cheap as some 2015 models, or at least within 5%.

    2018 CM SR5 4wd, 52000 miles, $32,800
    2018 CM SR5 2wd, 47,000 miles, $27500
    2016 CM SR5 2wd, 64,000 miles $25,000
    2016 CM SR5 4wd 37,000 miles $31,500
    2014 CM SR5 4wd 57,000 miles $28,000

Would you put more value on getting a newer model or lower mileage, regardless of year? Also, was the 38 gallon tank standard on SR5 CM in 2016?

Not standard. It needs an upgrade package (fairly common) to get the 38 gallon tank. I had the same buying parameters as you 3 years ago and ended up buying new because I couldn’t bring myself to buy a 4 year old truck with 50k miles to save $5,000.

I would consider it but I am not finding anything new for $35k or under in a CM with upgrade package. A new SR5 CM in 2wd stickers at $46,000, 4wd at $50k. I haven't been able to get anyone to discount a $46k truck down to $35k between rebate and dealer discounts.

Don’t forget to consider the finance rate from new to used. I choose new as I usually buy used but I planned to keep this until long after it’s paid off. I run about 18,000 miles per year. So if and that’s a big if I figure in 5 years I’ll be pushing 90,000 if I still have it. I plan to! So at the low finance rates they have I’d choose new.

I was in the same boat you are in right now. I looked for 3 years and shopped until I was going crazy. Seemed like every truck I looked at either had a ton of miles or was basically new. I even looked in a 500 mile radius from where I live and was planning on doing a "fly and drive". Finally found what I wanted within an hour of my house and pulled the trigger. Very happy with my purchase. Keep looking ... the right one will eventually pop up.

Get a newer model if you value the features they offer and be prepared to pay a bit more: Led lights, safety package, etc...

if you don’t value those, go for an older one and some possible savings.

Foot well led's, and interior LED buld replacement. (warm) Broke the front shock of the 3" spacer lift, so replaced with 6112/5160 and 1' block rear. KO 2's. Speaker replacement, added amp and (2) 10's under seat. Weathertech floor mats. Salex organizers. Ziebart undercoating. RCI front, transmission/diff, and gas tank skids received, waiting for spring install. Compustar remote starter. front/rear dash cam.
Personally I think it is worth it to have 4x4. I would even by a higher mileage truck to get at the right price point.

The prices you list are in line. You need to look at the features on each. Such as upgrade packages etc. Figure $4K+ for 4WD over 2WD. #2 on the list looks to be better. Then #3 if 2WD is fine. But it all depends on how clean the truck is, wheel upgrades, bucket seats etc. SR5s with upgrade packages are nice. Leather is great for me. Not because it's luxurious but because I spill shit all the time or have a taco shell disintegrate going down the road. I bought used because that's what I could afford and pay cash for.

Also consider that you'll have a lower APR with a new truck vs used. As for 4x4 vs 2wd, I go with 4x4. I always get stuck somewhere with a 2wd, I end up having my AWD vehicles pull me out of the situation or a bulldozer. Getting a base model 4x4 and do the upgrades in cash will save you at least 1K interests.

OP, if I could give you any advice to chew on, it is to plan out first what exactly you want. I can’t imagine the actual year is all that important to you, but consider stuff like the gas tank (26 vs 38gal), headlights (led vs standard), safety sense (which includes the cool adaptive cruise), maybe a sliding sunroof is a freaking MUST... whatever, just pencil out what you want, and THEN gather pricing.

After that, you can return to your plan and figure out if you need to cut, what can you add later, and get the price into range that way.

I had my list of non-negotiables. I wanted the new TSS stuff, mostly for the adaptive cruise, so I had to wait for ‘18. I also wouldn’t budge on the 5.7l, 4WD, 38gal tank, and I wanted leather.

The leather is what killed every deal I tried to work out with the dealership to get what I wanted and stay in my price range. I wound up with an inflated quote for dealer leather, or I was into Limiteds and paying for other stuff that I didn’t want or care about.

So, the leather requirement went bye bye after I researched Katzkin kits.

I landed in an SR5 with the SR5 and TRD Offroad upgrades, and I installed my leather a year later and I honestly couldn’t be any more pleased with the truck.

Mileage was not a consideration for me, as I was buying new. But I would still have approached it the same way; what truck do I want, exactly- and then go find it.

good luck, and please come back with pictures when you bite the bullet and make the deal!

With the anticipated mileage driven expected, I would lean lower miles as they will add up. Not much if any differences in 3rd gen year models.

I am in the St. Louis MO area, but am also looking in the DFW area as well as I travel there a couple times a years. I flew to NC for our FJ, so I am not opposed to traveling for the right vehicle.

Thank you everyone for the responses, some good info to assist in narrowing down my search. Since the prices never seem to really dip under $24k unless they have very high mileage, I am pretty much dealing with vehicles in the $25k - $32k range. That is one of the reasons I am probably not going the "high mileage" route as it just doesn't seem like there is much of a discount for a 120 - 140,000 mile vehicle as I see those still in the $21k - $24k range. I am trying to pay cash, so the lower the better, but it just seems like it will be worth paying an extra $4k-$7k to get something with mileage under 50,000 or so, which is about 4 years of use compared to the higher mileage vehicles.

I agree with you panicman in picking the "must have" items; the one must have is to get the console with bucket seats which come with the SR5 upgrade package. Many of the other items I am most particular about can be added later like heated seats, leather, bed cover etc. I am fine with the 4.6 or 5.7 engine choices and if I thought I would actually get better mpg with the 4.6, I would only go that way but from what I have read, that seems to be crap shoot. I think the biggest decision I need to settle on is whether I am ok to go with 2wd only.

I think 7.6Tundra stated 4wd is about a $4k difference, and that is what I am seeing out there as well on a comparable year and mileage vehicles. I think I am ok with purchasing a "non Toyota Certified", just not sure if the $4-$5k for 4wd is worth it based on my use of the vehicle and the fact that if needed, we have a FJ Cruiser if the need arises. The only thing I may miss is the possible occurrence of being out on the road when a snow storm occurs or the one week every other year or two when we get snow that hangs around for a week or two due to very cold weather vs the norm of it disappearing after a day or two.

I'll post a pic once I pull the trigger on one, until then, attached is our FJ.

I think I found a Tundra but have question. The vehicle was previously purchased as Toyota Certified vehicle with 12,000 miles on it. It currently has 24,000 miles so it is under factory warranty still, but from calling my dealer, he states the "certified" warranty does not transfer but the mfg warranty would obviously still be in place.

Has anyone purchased low mile vehicle and then went though the trouble of having a dealership certify it and pay for the Certified warranty? Not sure that is worth it but curious.

I'm assuming the dealer with the vehicle is not a Toyota dealer?

Correct. It is an off lease vehicle being sold by the leasing company. I am going to have it inspected by a shop, but want to make sure I am not missing anything on future warranty options.

Consider running the VINs of any possible purchase through the Toyota website. They just announced a recall on some Tundra fuel pumps. Seems to mostly be affecting 26 gal tank trucks.

    best of luck!!

If the vehicle is still within the 3 yr 36k warranty, you can get a platinum warranty for up to 8 yr 100k for a very reasonable price. We have a forum contact at wolverine Toyota that can sell your the warranty directly (many on this forum can attest to this). This is a Toyota warranty, not a third party warranty.

Thanks! I just ran it through, looks like Toy Care service at 5 and 10 miles and an SRS Sensor update that was done. It looks like Toy Care ends at 25,000 miles or 11/22/19, so I am out of luck on that end, although the Roadside Asst expires 3/28/2020.

Good to know, thanks. I am usually not a warranty guy, but I will probably make the call just to see if I can justify the cost.
