Good morning boys and girls. I picked up a new O/U for trap shooting a few days ago and found that I need a cheek pad. The gun patterned well at 40 yards so I don't need to raise the comb, but she's a cheek biter. I've never needed a pad on my pump guns so I'm looking for suggestions/opinions from anyone that's used one. I looked at the Cheek-Eez but not sure I want to adhere anything to the stock as it's got fairly nice wood.

Stevens-Goes-16-Gauge-with-New-555E-Over-and-Under-cover.jpg This is a stock pic, but mine is almost identical. It's a Steven's 555E. Nothing fancy but I have the same gun in 20 gauge for grouse and woodcock and love it.

Maybe stupid questions, but are you dropping your mount early or not holding your cheek firmly against the comb?

Some people start dropping their mount early when transitioning from a gun with a standard rib to one with a high-rib because they're trying to see the clay brake and the high rib blocks their view. But this doesn't look like a high-rib gun.

Is it significantly lighter than your previous trap guns? Is this a 12 or 20? Do you shoot 12 often or mostly 20?

Guns with a lot of drop at the comb have problems with cheek bite, but I'm not aware of any modern shotguns built that way.

Does it always bite or is it just on crossing shots?

Not stupid questions at all. I pretty much always shoot a 12 for trap and none of my 12's are high rib. It is lighter than my Winchester by about a pound and a half and I did take that into consideration. The recoil is definitely manageable at my shoulder. The comb is also a bit wider than my synthetic 12 so it's possible that that's part of it. As far as dropping my mount, I honestly can't say as I've only had the opportunity to pattern it. Tomorrow night will be the first time I shoot a trap round with it.

Looks like you got a great peace of wood.

I know a guy that trains dogs and picked up one of these in 410. He fell in love with it and picked two more in 12 and 20. They are nice guns for the money. Let us know if you have any issues with it trap shooting. I haven't talked to anyone that has done any high volume shooting with one.
