We will be taking the tundra from new orleans to breckenridge in the beginning of march. we will be going through parts of new mexico and heading up to colorado to stay with family for a few days.
This will be in the first week of March so I'm guessing it's going to be pretty cold and snowy/icy. With that being said, any tips for either the truck or the actual drive? We may have a sub 32' day here every once in a while but definitely dont have to "winterize" anything.
    Truck is a 16 pro with 295 70 18 toyo at2s, 4wd and decent lighting.
So shoot some thoughts and ideas over. Thanks

EDIT: see post 13 for results of trip! Thanks

    Enjoy the drive!
Have you ever driven snow and ice in the mountains or hills?

Tundra handles just fine. If in doubt, slow down and give yourself some room to break. Watch for idiots who think their 4x4 can handle snow and ice at 80 MPH. You have 4x4HI; use it where needed. Enjoy the trip and drive safe.

If you see TX, CA and AZ folks driving, do the opposite of what they are doing and you'll be GTG.

You probably want to use a windshield washer that has anti freeze in it especially once you get into higher elevations.(you can buy in any gas station once you get closer nothing special) In march if it gets warm your windshield is going to get crazy dirty so probably want to have an extra bottle in the truck. Also having warm blankets and clothes just in case is always a good idea.

I’d 2nd the washer fluid comments. Make sure to pack a good snow brush that has a blade for scraping away ice.

In icy/snowy conditions use 4x4HI and leave distance btwn vehicles. Drive at slow controlled speed. You’ll be good

Learn something new everyday. How cool is that place? Looks like a relatively small sized park.

    Thanks for the ideas.
-20 washer fluid is on my list of things to swap in the truck.
As far as driving in snow/mountains, only a few times.
We will have warm clothes with us already, we can throw a blanket in for incase
Noob question: 4x4 on the hwy, what are the ins and outs? Only time I use it around me us when I'm offroad.
    Thanks

I believe it's noted behind the driver's side sun visor. IIRC don't go above 65MPH when on 4HI. Switch demand, no need to put in neutral like 4LO.
Turn off 4HI when making slow turns like in a parking lot; tranny don't like that and you'll hear some weird noises LOL

hop on Amazon and buy a cheap windshield cover. then you don't have to scrape ;)

if you don't have keyless start, don't fire up your truck and go inside while it warms up...you'll get a puffing ticket since it's easier and more profitable to ticket the hard working people than to catch the bad people :(

make sure your antifreeze is up to par. a good 50/50 mix should be fine

don't use 4wd on the dry roads, but breck will probably all still be snow covered. you can accelerate fine.....stopping is the part people seem to forget about ;) have fun

So we made it back from our trip. Thanks to everyone for the tips. We happened to catch a ton of snow in brek, about 40-50" while we were there. The truck performed great the entire trip, and the toyo at2s did as good as I could ask in the snow and ice. 4wd was a must the whole time once in brek.
Trip was amazing but I'm glad to be back home here are some pics

Don’t have much experience in snow, but what little I do have is with the tundra. I did just fine with 2wd.
Go slow, give PLENTY of room (plus a little more for good measure) to stop. 4wd is good, but won’t help worth a shit if icy.
Exercise common sense and assume other drives don’t have it.
After the trip, take a hose and thouroughly spray the undercarriage due to salt. Don’t want rust to take hold especially in the humidity down here!

    Have fun and safe trip!

Edit: well shit, looks like I missed the party LOL (note to self: look at dates before responding when appropriate)

Glad everything went great, beautiful pics!
