Took the New Mexico section of the trans America trail last month on the way to Breckenridge to snowboard.

it’s only about 100 miles from the tip of the Oklahoma panhandle to Trinidad colorado going this route. The farther eastern sections are fast and smooth grated roads, some fun sweeper corner sliding, some fun smooth cattle guard jumping. It gets rougher and slower going the farther northwest you get to right around the Colorado state line, then it opens back up to more fast grated roads to Trinidad. Had a good time!

Right at the OK/NM state line is the crossing of the old Santa Fe Trail

Something shot through my fog light and got caught between my rim and brake caliper. Luckily got stopped quickly and had no damage other than the plastic part of the baja designs mount was blown out.

never found what the object was, had to be a rock or metal from the noise it made. It made a 3 stripe scar on the inner barrel of the wheel you can see, pretty evenly spaced. Weird deal!

A good lesson to bring good tools and floor jack on trips. Back on the road in 10 minutes.

There’s a pass about halfway through that’s fairly steep and rough.

Some short videos of the run. Definitely not technical or difficult but fast and fun with outstanding scenery, I’d recommend it if you’re in the area. It gets fairly remote, no cell service in parts so make sure you’re equipment is good and have a good spare ready, there are some pretty rough jagged rock sections.

There are a few areas that say “private property no trespassing,” but from what I read from the trail creators it is all public road and you are just not supposed to get off the road. I came across no closed gates, only cattle guards.

Looks like fun. I pass through there a few times a year. Might have to check it out.
Regarding the flat, were you following someone or? That's wild.

Was not following anybody. Honestly had met an oncoming truck, but can’t remember if it happened as the truck passed, but I think it was a few seconds later. It was a weird deal! And the tire was fine, just hit the fog light and got inside the wheel somehow!

Wow a floor jack for your gear. I've never thought of this option. I think I just might start. I'm weighing the pros and cons for floor jack vs hi-lift. I'm from New Mexico and do most of my work and trips from Albuquerque to NW NM on dirt roads, sometimes they are extremely muddy but I avoid those trips as much as I can. Just an interesting tool choice for me to consider, but I think a much smarter one.

Yeah I started carrying one awhile back, I don’t have many points to high lift from being stock, when I go on a trip I just tie down a spare in the bed and wedge that floor Jack between it and the side of the bed, tie it all down tight, sure makes a tire change quick and easy.

Love it. I'm throwing in my crusty floor jack on the next trip. Awesome pictures BTW. I've never traveled in those parts. Mainly NW NM into Colorado.
