I'm Steve from St. Augustine Fl. I'm looking to get a Tundra 2nd Gen for towing my 19 ft center console boat, around 3500 Lbs. keeping my eye open for a 4x4, but wondering if a 4x2 would work. I know there are a lot of variables, steep ramp, algae covered, ect. Any thoughts?

I’m 4x2 and it never bothered me cause I don’t tow anything, but if I was getting a truck specically for towing a boat, I’d feel more comfortable having 4x4 . For all the reasons your mentioned above. Once In a while it wouldn’t bother me but your buying it for that sole purpose. Get the 4x4

Welcome! With the 4X2 you would definitely need to keep some good tread on your tires+ add a bunch of weight to the back. You could always add a true limited slip to the rear if need be.

The boat has a heavy tongue weight, that's in my favor. A true limit slip sounds expensive. I guess I'm getting impatient looking for a 4x4 that's in good shape that won't break the bank. I'm currently pulling the boat with a 2002 Trailblazer that's a little under powered.

Oh man....you will have plenty of power. The 4X2 tundras are surprisingly capable. I pull a trailer 5 days a week in Ohio. From my experience their has only been a few times when I needed to use 4X4 but, if I wouldn't of had it I would have been screwed. I guess it depends on how much your going to be pulling that boat and if your willing to take the risk of not having 4X4

    Welcome to the party!!

A 4x2 is capable and will pull it easily. The reality is ramp conditions, as youve already addressed. So id feel fine towing, but its always better to have and not need than to need and not have.

I went through the same issue a few weeks ago, as we also shopped for a Tundra to pull a center console boat. Obviously, 4x4 is better...but also much more expensive. We researched a lot and weighed the pros and cons. We learned that a Rwd is capable for most conditions. Our AT tread will help with mossy or algae covered ramps. Also, we mainly fish saltwater...which has ramp growth far less often.

I would want a 4 wheel drive. I’m a boat owner and I know some of the ramps I’ve been on are sketchy and I’ve used 4 wheel drive.

Thanks for the replies, I think we are going to hold out for the 4x4 for the few occasions we need it. As some one said, "but its always better to have and not need than to need and not have". good quote, Larmand. I just have to be patient...

Just FYI, your in St Augustine and I am in Jax and the local boat ramps here suck. I had a Ram at the time I had my boat (20ft center console)and always had to use 4x4. Green algae, smooth concrete etc. No longer have the Ram or boat but I would recommend the 4by.
