I’m building up a new (to me) 2000 Tundra.
The brakes all the way around are shot.
I plan to go factory everything. Since I need new calipers is this a time to upgrade or is modification needed to get the “updated “ calipers more than just buying the parts ?
I will need new drums. New pads… you name it.
If you have a suggestion I’m all ears.

I would order the bigger 13WLs for calipers, and the corresponding brake pads. They came stock on later 1st gens and are slightly bigger than the 13WEs you have. You'll have to trim the dust shield though.

Thank you for the info. Will the newer calipers line up with the “original “ rotors ?
I’m not sure how my installer will be into modification / fabrication

Depends. 2000s came with crappy brakes and rotor warpage is A fact of life. I’m on my third set of rotors and I’m gentle on brakes. Prolly would be on original pads if not for rotors. Upgraded rotors and calipers may not fit under your original rims.

Yes they should be fine. Any decent mechanic can figure out the dust shield issue. Some people reported that they didn't even have to trim theirs.

Just curious, how many miles are on the truck? When you say new brakes all around, what are you planning to do with the rear?

He should be fine with 13WL's. If he tried to do the GX calipers on 16" wheels he might have an issue but the 13WL's were a factory upgrade from Toyota starting in 03.

Since I’m assuming mine had the WE calipers and I will order the the WL calipers. Is there anything else needed for the conversion ?
I assume they use different pads and maybe shim kit ?

Ok ordered new brembo rotors today.
Ready to order calipers. Mine are for sure WE models. I’m having the local shop do them.
Do I hand them WLs and the WL pads and say nothing. It’s that easy or do I need to update him on more info than this.

See the 3rd reply in this thread. It contains all the info you need to do the WL conversion, if you're cool with the risks. @FirstGenVol fought with shit brakes for eons because the shop he took his too didn't mill something correctly, and he basically threw like $600 out the window (in the garbage actually).

If you want to do this right, hook up with the dude everyone else used, rather than find a source locally.

There's no risk with 13 WL's. That's what you have on your truck.

14WA's are the big boys that came on Lexus GX460's and 4Runners.

I for sure have the WE now. I want to get the WL if it’s simply plug and play.

If it’s nothing more than WL calipers and the WL pads of my choosing.

I checked out that thread and the guy seems left confused.

If you want 13WL's, just go on Rock Auto and select 2004 Tundra parts. That's what I did. Pick your poison for rotors, pads, and calipers.

I was able to "trim" my dust shields with a pair of pliers. It's not hard.

Other things that will help is making sure you bleed the brakes very thoroughly with new fresh fluid. Don't forget to bleed the prop valve that's near the spare tire. You can also adjust this valve to send more braking bias to the front or rear as needed.

Lastly, if you haven't cleaned and adjusted your rear brake components that is very important. If the rear drums aren't working properly your pedal will feel like crap and it will impact braking performance.

Be careful, the shoes arent identical, but are close enough to make a mistake if you dont line em up.

With the rear I am planning on keeping it stock. Going with OEM.
Just the front I am toying with.

If it’s just the dust shield I think I can live with that. Do the brake lines match up ?

I have the WLs and do a lot of mountain driving and had warped rotors in no time. If you have the need and $, get cryo treated rotors. I did and have no issues anymore.

Brembo rotors came in today. eBay had a deal on a pair of them.
150 for the set. They look to be high quality

I just looked and I have the factory 16 inch wheels. Will the bigger caliper work with this rim ?

the 13wls will. I don't know about the ones posted above. Upgrading to a 17" 4runner rim is not that big of as deal either

I just found the Brembos are made in China. Not real thrilled about this but worse things have happened. I’m hoping I don’t run into issues with the WL calipers fitting under these rims.

I had a new muffler put on and while it was up I got photos of the issues under it.
Looks like the steering rack needs new bushings and my valve cover replacement has stopped the leak from above.

I’ll update after the new year when the new brakes and bushings go in.

Question about the lines. I figure while I’m there I need new brake lines. The “soft “ lines. Do the WL and WE take the same line

turns out the same part number for the line is good for the WL and WE caliper. Might be common knowledge for some. Wasn’t for me.

    Well everything is in.
Since the brakes were so bad it needed everything above.
My cvs were shot. My upper ball joints needed doing. My sway bar needed links. The rack needed bushings. I got JBA uppers. New 5100s for the rear. CVs from Toyota. Poly everything for bushings. Here’s some photos. Hopefully get installed this week.
