Hey all, I'm looking to turn my 03 Tundra Access Cab 4x4 into a road trip/dirt limo to get me, mountain bikes, and the dog to all the cool places in the Rockies. Not really looking to do a ton of technical trails, but would like the truck to be capable offroad and well-mannered for highways.

I need to replace the stock suspension ASAP (blown, Icon Stage 2?), new tires ASAP (AT K02 Pizza Cutters? and wheels?) and to do a build out of the Flippac (water, drawers, kitchen)

I have so many questions and need to balance the build against my travel budget, so thanks in advance for any advice!

Specific challenges to the build are:
    • make it good at offroad travel, mostly washboard roads and some high clearance trails without sacrificing highway comfort and mileage
    • carry bikes, camping gear, and dog in comfort
    • do the above things while saving cash for trips

Here's what I've done so far:
    • Dual battery (Odysseys with Blue Seas charging relay, power steering res relocation)
    • Dometic CFX50 fridge
    • Heated Seats
    • Kenwood Head Unit
    • Rhino liner
    • swapped in my old Flippac

I definitely need help with my plans going forward:
    • Good suspension (maybe a small lift?)
    • Good AT tires, balance between highway and offroad capability
    • Build out the camper with some organization, drawers?
    • Armor (basic sliders/skid plates, nothing fancy)
    • Self-recovery gear

Welcome from eastern CO! Making a build thread in the 1st gen builds section may be your best way to accumulate advise on parts, or have @T-Rex266 move this over there.

As far as the build goes, are you wanting to go up in tire size with the suspension update?

Yep, I think so. The caveat is not too big, I don't really want to mess with gearing. I'm on 31s (275/65r17s) now, nothing bigger than 33s, which might be pushing it anyway. However, I'd rather have a larger tire and less lift where possible, tall narrow tires seem to fit that bill.

I'll make a post over in 1st gen builds, thanks!

First off, that flippac is all wrong for what you want to do and you need to get rid of it ASAP. I’ll be a nice guy and take it off your hands for you. :D

Seriously though, you can fit 33’s with a minor lift. ICON stage 2 is a great option.

I would also suggest doing the icon leaf pack with the adjustable leaf since you have the flip pac

Haha, indeed. It's an OG Flippac I bought in 2006ish. Oldie but a goodie, no torsion bar issues either. For a hot minute I thought of a GFC, but they have like a 1 year lead time now!!

And by minor lift - something like 1.5"s? No need for UCA upgrade?

255/75r17s? Any issue with backspacing on stock wheels or would I need some new steelies? or SCSs? :D

Ive always kept an eye out for a flippac but they’re too expensive. Got my tepui at a steal.

1.5-2” lift can be done without new uca’s. Your alignment will be the determining factor.

@BestGen is running 34x11r17’s with a minor lift. I’m going with 285/75r17’s with ICON’s set around 2”, eventually.

If I didn't still have it, I wouldn't buy it. Great concept, design and build not so good, especially used.

What's the process for doing the lift and checking the alignment? Take it in with a 2" lift and if it's no go, adjust it down and try again?

Pretty much. You shouldn’t have an issue under 2.5” of lift though. If you’re worried about it, SPC uppers are adjustable and relatively cheap. Wheelers has them on discount right now as well.

Nothing in the STT PROs that size, the ST MAXX has that size.

So on Icons - they don't sell a 700lb spring that I could find, but ToyTec clearly has the option on their kits to choose between 650 and 700. Seems like 700 is the right thing if it's an option, but I'm not seeing it. What are all the DC or heavily loaded people doing?

I assume you’re referring to the RXT leaves? Not sure they make those for 1st gens yet. Deaver may be a better option for him, or going the custom route.

285/70R17 may be a good fit, believe those are right around 33”. You may need to adjust the coils up for a little more lift, though there are a few folks on here running as big as a 35 on 1st gens without much themselves. Check out @Swalters build, can’t remember the other guy’s handle but I’ll post it if it comes to mind.

I got 700lb springs, free spanner, free superbumps and free shipping for less than ICON’s website. And with no tax.

Perfect! Saw the same price through a few other shops, but like being able to go straight in case I need a different spring.

Still doing a ton of digging online (it is the holidays after all) and one other wrinkle is C vs E rated tires. I'm leaning towards Es but I've always run Cs and not sure how big the difference is from a comfort v durability standpoint. What are most people running?

I'm always keeping an eye out for a Four Wheel Camper. The Grandby 8'model which is harder to find. They're also very expensive.:(
The tires are 34/10.5/17 load range D BFGs which, like all BFGs, run small. I wish I would've gotten the 35s and done a little bfh action on the pinch weld. I clear the 34s easy now. They only rub at full lock so no biggy there. I thought you were going to run 35s Chris?

I run C-rated 6-ply BFG KM2s on my dedicated trail rig and I've yet to have a flat(knock on wood!). I had E rated 16s previously on the Tundra which rode harsh and don't air down for shit.

How much a lift do you have to clear 34s? BFH is in my plans.

Depends on what day of the week is it! With ST maxx’s, 315’s are only 1/2” taller than the 285/75’s but over 1.5” wider. I prefer pizza cutters and don’t need a 12.7” wide tire. That just leads to figment issues at full compression and full lock. It would be nice to say I clear 35’s on 2” of lift though. Id have to tub the firewall which is doable but extreme.

They're set at 2.5". The previous(original)owner told me he went thru a lot of cv boots prior to having some better quality ones installed. So far so good. The more lift, the more angle you put on the boots which spin constantly. That's why I'm researching putting locking hubs from an early Tacoma so you can unlock on the street.
