    Hi, everyone
I just bought a new Tundra TRD Pro Lunar Rock one week ago and on my way home from the dealership, just after 23 miles of use, a P0012 code appeared. I took it back to the dealership, they cleared the code and tested it. The code didnt show up and they gave it back to me. Once again on my way home the check engine showed up again. Now they didnt find out what was causing the code, once again reset the computer after consulting with "somebody form Toyota", and the guy took the truck for additional testing to see if the code comes back. Apparently no mechanical job has been done, only software stuff. The salesman told me that he could give me another truck, but they don't have Lunar Rock.

What would you do/I should do? It bothers me that a new truck starts giving codes as soon as it did, worries me that it might be a lemmon.

Doing a quick search, I would still push the lazy dealership to investigate the problem. Could be low oil (not changing oil at 5k vs pushing it to 10k) or a VVTI sensor problem.

P0012 is the OBD-II generic code indicating the engine control module (ECM) has determined that the intake camshaft timing for bank 1 is more retarded than what the ECM has commanded it be. This over-retarded timing condition could be during the advancing or retarding phase of the camshaft timing.

    Update:
I went to the dealership after they told me that they fixed the error code. I requested to talk with the mechanic so that he would explain to me step by step what he did on it. I literally spent 1 hour talking to him and the salesman. I brought a document I found at the web explaining a procedure Toyota mechanics should do to diagnose/fix this error. I include the link here...

The mechanic told me he did exactly what it says in the document I brought, up to the point where they recommend changing the OCV or opening the motor. He said it would be "a sin" to open a motor of a 23 mile new truck. What he ended doing was what they call a "learning value reset". He says that this procedure fixed the problem. After they explained everything, I insisted that in my opinion, the truck is defective from factory and that I would expect from them to try to find a new one in the color I wanted. They told me they already did that, but after some persuation the salesman called the general manager and he asked for 2 days to try and find a new one. The next day they called and told me they found one but was on Jacksonville port (they have to ship it to Puerto Rico) and that it would take10 to 14 days to arrive. Its been 5 days since then, and I'm still running the original Tundra, 100 miles after they fixed the code the second time, and no check engine light.

Can't say if the truck is behaving as it should because I had never had a pickup, or even a V8 vehicle before, not sure if I finally keep it or trade it for a brand new one. Hope this story has a happy ending, I'll keep you updated.

At a minimum I would have the dealer provide an extended warranty for the truck or even a lifetime power train and engine warranty like some dealers provide.

This happened to my truck on the way home from buying it. They reset everything and then it happened again a day later. They said they see this occasionally on 3UR-FE engines and it is some stuff getting lodged in the oil pressure valve for the VVT system. They said it happens when the engine is built. They cleaned it out of one of the valves (only one was affected) and I haven’t had any more codes in over 3,000 miles.

Since there was “junk” built up in one of the valves, I changed the oil with PUP at around 2,000 and will do it again with PUP at 5,000.

Update: Two weeks ago I gave back the original Tundra to the dealership and gave me a company car to ride for one week until the promised 2021 Tundra in Lunar Rock arrived. I drove the first truck for 2 weeks after the repair and 500 miles later no check engine lights showed up, but decided to get the new truck anyway just to be safe. I found out the dealership sold the original Tundra the next day I gave it back as a dealer demonstration car with just 1000 miles (didn't ask the price it was sold but the salesman told me it wouldnt be much different than a new one). Now I've put 600 miles on the new one without any complain (knock on wood).

Ditto on the good dealer. So much for new cars being built and being a =clean= process. I changed my oil on my 18 after 1200 miles. I’d do it sooner on these builds after reading this.
