So I have a retrax MX amd I love it for day-to-day things, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N2RL5WN?ie=UTF8
but now I'm finding out I am running out of room in the bed for the 2 to 4 times a year we actually travel. I want to mount a low profile bed rack right above it for carrying bulky things like an EZ-UP and such for those few trips.

    So
    #1) I saw this: https://tventuring.com/no-weld-pickup-truck-bed-racks-and-cross-bars-t3193-s10.html
and it looks like I could do something similar that wouldn't interfere with the retrax rails.

#2) I also asked retrax and they said I could replace the MX rails with newly purchased XR rails and then purchase the corresponding cross bars that would work with that same solution (a bit expensive for both).

Does anyone have any insight for me? Part of me wants to buy the new retrax rails (option #2) but if I ever get rid of the retrax I also lose the rails and crossbars. I could probably go with option #1, but I'd likely have to drill through the top of my bed rails top make this type of rails fit alongside the MX rails, would that be a concern I should worry about?

I have the Retrax PRO XR and two sets of bars, depending on what I’m hauling. Yakima Overhaul HD bars are lockable, have adjustable height, and are great for longer items like lumber or kayaks. Front Runner bars sit lower and will handle a bit more bulk weight. Neither type interfere with the ability to open/close the Retrax cover.

So if if I go with option #2 and replace my retrax rails with the XR ones I will likely get those Front Runner crossbars that you have, they look great.

I've got this same setup and love it. Retrax XR + Yakima Overhaul HD.
