Just bought 2k sqft of engineered hardwood flooring to redo the 1st floor of our house. We currently have carpet / laminate mix. Previous owner used quarter round mouldings to cover the expansion gaps on the laminate. Debating on doing the same or removing all the base trim and leaving out the quarter round. I think it would look cleaner without the quarter, but would be tons more work. Any thoughts / experience? Looking for things I may be overlooking.

Remove baseboard, so much more of a cleaner look and besides since you doing so much work on the floors y not take the baseboards better than deciding to do it later if you change your mind

It can be done, more labor intensive and the way I've seen it done is drywall is cut from floor and new floor tucked under and plastered to give it a clean look..floor must NOT be floating but glued down..very popular here in my area.

Didn't think of cutting out the drywall. That sounds like too much work for me, but I'm sure it looks great.

I'm going to either leave the base trim in place and apply quarter round after the floor, or remove base trim, install the floors and reinstall base trim leaving out the quarter round. I dont think I explained very well in the original post.

If you dont like the look of quarter rnd you can use 3/4 x 3/4 stock..and no bb...just an idea.

Don't use 1/4 round, use Shoe molding. Shoe stands the same height as 1/4 round and only protrudes 1/2" out. Your cuts along existing base will need to be perfect to allow for expansion of the floor as to not show a gap when installing shoe molding.
