Threw in the towel waiting for the new tundras and picked up a gently used 2016 yesterday. My first pickup truck! Have 3 youngins and live on a small farm. This will mainly be the family vehicle. Never been off roading but never had the opportunity...until now! The biggest issue currently is knowing where to start!

    Stuff I want/need:
*Side step (ordered a rhino 20 - was that wrong?)
    *Wheel fenders?
*new wheels/tires suggestions? - I don't love the rims but tires look decent
    *tent or camping ideas?
    *Apple carplay for Nav
    *Cat converter protection
    *LED headlights
*Not a fan of chrome so bumper and side mirrors replacement

    **what am i overlooking?

Excited to be a tundra owner!

If your truck has the black shocks, changing those would offer great improvement.

Also check out the TRD rear sway bar- one of the best bang for the buck mods for a Tundra and cost is low.

@Ptundra we farm and I have a 14, don't know if you haul cattle or anything but towing mirrors were a must, also if you plan on using it to farm I would suggest fender flares, I dont have them and regret it will be getting some soon. Also what MadMax said a winch, you can get a front end (bumper replacement) with one attached (not a fan of chrome either) , I have inline pods I do use them to check cattle on the farm in the dark...so possibly a light bar? I also have 2 little ones and also use this as my everyday vehicle. I love it, not to mention they do too!

Don't haul much now but that can change. Def want the light bar and agree the winch will be useful. So now I need to find the right combo!

I have a N-Fab. Not sure if that helps you or not, but can always google front end replacement and get some ideas!

If you replace them, Bilstein 5100s are the only way to go. I mean, there are other ways to do it, but why? 5100s are where it’s at.

I saw something on the forum about this...and agree this is needed:)

Speaking of getting in and out, why would someone choose a 'slider' side step vs something like the Rhino20?

Rock sliders are made to protect the truck when going over rocks and rough terrain. They aren’t meant to be steps. If you want a step rail, get a step rail. Toyota equipped mine with what I think are called stealth bars. They are steps that somewhat protect the truck as well.

Can't wait till she gets home to check! For a newbie - would you recommend getting all of these 'mod' items new or is the gently used section alright?

The used section here is often a great place to find items for your vehicle. Personally I wouldn’t buy used shocks, but to each their own. It often depends on mileage and such. You can often find stuff where people have simply changed their mind and are going a different route to do things.

Makes sense - I'll stick with the Rhino20s bc the fam needs a step (and protects leather) and I read it helps prevent some door dings. also - Amazon had some on sale!

A friend told me to have the rims sprayed matte black vs buying new ones. ANyone have experience with that? Seems risky/permanent yet affordable:)

Personally I would look on marketplace or maybe on here, plastidip can always be used and taken off, my highlander has been plastidipped. There are plenty of DYI videos on how to do that if you are wanting a cheaper alternative...

Powder coat would be a better, but more costly option. And I suggest gloss finish on the wheels. Matte finish on black wheels is hard to maintain, especially black. Have to be careful cleaning, some products leave white stains. Even water spots are hard to deal with on matte black wheels and I wont even go into road grime or brake dust. Can't tell you how many matte black wheels I see that look like crap and have stains etched in them. I think some people like them because they feel like they dont have to wash the wheels and tires since they are black.

Welcome! You're gonna love the truck. Just some personal feedback
-I really like my gorhino RB20 running boards, I don't think you'll have any complaints.
-Been looking at getting one of these Valhalla cat shields, they seem to be pretty popular among people on these forums: https://www.tundras.com/forums/valhalla’s-shield.129/
-carplay you'll need to replace the head unit entirely. There are a couple threads on this if you search the forum.
    - I have a Roam Adventure Co Vagabond XL roof top tent with the annex. Absolutely love it. Tons of room and would fit your family of 4/5 no problem.

Not sure about bad ones, but everyone seems to rave about the badlands apex from harbor freight. In general I think the badlands models from there are great value.

There are sliders that also function perfectly as steps. Typically called Slider Steps they give up some of the ground clearance over a traditional rock slider, but add a running board or step bar.

    https://sleeoffroad.com/products/sok1241/

    https://cbioffroadfab.com/product/2nd-gen-toyota-tundra-rock-sliders/

I know there are others as well.

Welcome. I have a slightly different approach. I'd start by combing through this subsite and look at others for inspiration.

Welcome to Tundras.... first question how much can you spend...It can get very expensive with the mods you will want to have vs need to have. but first one for interior storage is the ESP under seat storage bins. For a lot of other things @memario1214 especially lighting but he can also get most other things for you also.
